Chapter 6 - A Death in the Family
Three months later
"Kristina, hey it's Saoirse."
"Hello Saoirse, how are you?"
"Fine, I guess... Do you have time to talk?"
"Sure, what's up?" Kristina asked, sitting up in her chair, her antennae
up and alert.
"It's my dad. He died of a heart attack at the mill today. Just
dropped dead there in front of all his coworkers."
"Oh my god, Saoirse! I... I'm so sorry!"
"Holy hell that fucker Minos! How could he be so stupid? We talked
about this," she raged in her head.
"I know. I'm sort of numb, and I can't stop crying for some reason,"
she sniffled into the phone.
"Well, that's to be expected Saoirse. It's ok to cry, I know I would."
Kristina's mind was whirring. She needed to call her bosses
immediately.
"Where are you, do you want me to come get you? Be with you?"
"No, that's ok," she sniffled again. "I have to head to the airport
right now," she said sadly. "I just wanted to tell someone. I'll call
you when I get back."
"Wait, Saoirse, how are you going to deal with your dad's estate? I
mean, you know... no one there knows he has a daughter now, right?"
"No, you're right. I won't be making an appearance as his child.
You're friend the lawyer in Manhattan took care of everything a couple
months back. Changed Dad's will, took Rowan out and put in Saoirse,
etc.... I'll go to the funeral, but I need to avoid everyone who will be
there. I guess..."
Kristina could hear quiet sobs on the other end of the line.
"I guess that part of my life... is gone for good now. Rowan is truly
dead," she sniffled.
"Oh Saoirse, it's ok," she said tenderly. "I know that must be a very
difficult thing to think about. It's never ok to lose a parent. But
you have so much ahead of you sweety," Kristina soothed.
She disliked sappy language, she was half German after all, but there
was a time for everything. She was certainly saddened by the sudden
loss of her mother a decade earlier and had at least some empathy for
the woman.
"Listen, do what you need to do in Pittsburg. Call me if you need
anything and we'll get together as soon as you're back, ok? And listen,
you'll come have Thanksgiving with me,? You're not alone, I promise."
"Thank you, Kristina. You're such a good friend. I'm not sure how I
could get through all this without you."
"Oh Saoirse, it's no trouble at all. Be well and safe travels. Call me
when you're on your way back ok?"
"I will. Promise."
The lined clicked dead.
She pulled out the satellite phone and quickly dialed one of the numbers
she had memorized.
"We have a problem."
"And that is," the voice responded, perturbed.
"Someone seems to have dealt with the girl's father. I thought we
discussed not upsetting the status quo. Why was this done."
There was silence on the other line.
"Let me get back to you," the voice said, ending the call.
Kristina sat at her desk trying to think through the various scenarios
that might play out. She had not yet discussed the death of Dr. Juno or
the disappearance of Dr. Teiresias with Saoirse. She could explain away
one but not two. Dr. Juno's death had looked like a car accident and
was searchable on the internet. Dr. Teiresias's was not searchable as
"she" was truly and utterly gone, likely her atomic mass was returned to
the earth at this point. Octa had fired him so at least his place of
work was a dead end for anyone looking to find him.
Regardless, Saoirse was no fool. She was training as a scientist.
Training to find these sorts of clues and connect them.
The satellite phone buzzed to life.
"Yes."
"No orders were given here. Our assets are not online or even in that
half of the world. It would appear that the circumstances are of a
natural cause."
"You're sure?" she asked impulsively, not believing the answer.
"Utterly and completely. These things happen. So much the better for
us. How is the plan coming together?" the voice asked.
"The plan is in place. I'm working through the details as we speak.
Mid-January will work as you asked. I think I'll be relocating to
Gotham."
"Understood. Report back when you have the details. The principles
will be sure to be in town to take advantage."
"Of course. I'll call you soon."
As she put the phone down, she glanced at her screen. She entered the
password again and the screen came to life.
The Delta Sodality was nothing if not opportunistic. Kristina's mission
had evolved from discovering if the formula Dr. Juno was working on was
real and viable to now architecting the first use of it in the field for
Delta's purposes.
The strokes of the plan revolved around good old-fashioned theft, but at
a level worth well into the billions according to her bosses. The idea
was to use the formula on a wealthy businessman, someone they said had
stolen from them. They had found the man, a traitor in their words, in
New York and were making plans to ambush him and exact their revenge.
Kristina had spent the last three months perfecting a way to aerosolize
the solution so she could use it as a spray, not unlike how Rowan had
been dosed. Her bosses had found that the man would be attending a low-
key financial symposium at a swanky Manhattan hotel. She was to make
contact with the man and get him away from the meeting to a secluded
floor under the pretense of discussing his funding of her biotech
startup. Once there, she would dose him with the formula and the
members of Delta Sodality would surprise him. The man would then be
forced to sign over his fortune if he wanted to be returned to manhood.
Obviously, there was no way to turn the man back once the formula did
its work, so her employers would sell the new woman into service in the
black-market sex trade, assuming the new "she" was still young enough
looking.
For optimal chances of success, her employers made it clear that Saoirse
would need to be coopted into helping her. They had it under good
authority that the man had a weakness for gorgeous women. At her best,
Kristina was attractive, pretty even, but not in Saoirse's league.
Saoirse would get his attention, luring him with Kristina to the ambush.
What's more, her employers intended to take that opportunity to abduct
Saoirse and sell her to the same sex traffickers. They felt that almost
six months was long enough to see if the formula had any side effects.
From a scientific perspective, Kristina was correct that that was not
nearly enough time, but her employers were not scientists. Their only
goal was to enrich themselves and protect their riches.
Kristina turned away from her desk and looked out the window. She was
disturbed by the implications of the plan particularly as it pertained
to Saoirse. Those who played the game had what was coming to them.
They understood the risks and consequences, mostly. Saoirse was an
innocent in this. She had suffered considerably already, her entire
life flipped upside down. And now with her father's passing...It was
distasteful what they planned to do to her. Her life would be beyond
ruined; a veritable hell would closest to the truth.
She contemplated the situation and concluded she was trapped. Letting
Saoirse out would likely turn their wrath on her. While she was the
sole person alive that understood how to concoct the formula that held
so much potential to Delta, her life, or at least her freedom, was most
certainly not guaranteed.
