Chapter 5 - New Beginning
After a full day in the lab with Dr. Juno the following Monday, Kristina
sat down at her desk and pulled out the sat phone from its spot in the
drawer.
"Do you have what you need from Dr. Juno?" the voice asked.
"Yes, I was able to reproduce the solution exactly today in the lab."
"Very good."
The connection went dead, and Kristina returned the phone to her desk
drawer, aware that she had just sentenced the na?ve doctor to death. It
was time to go home.
Saoirse was making dinner for them when she got back to the brownstone.
Scents of baking chicken wafted through the first floor, flooding her
nostrils as she closed the front door.
"Wow, you cook?" asked Kristina coming into the kitchen, impressed with
what she saw displayed out on the counter.
"Not too much, but with YouTube and some patience I think we can handle
baked chicken. I also have some instant cous cous and frozen peas
ready. Here, I cut some cheese up in case you're hungry. There is a
sharp cheddar and a smoked gouda. I could only find Triscuits for
crackers. Oh, I opened a bottle of your chardonnay. I hope that was ok?
I figured I needed to start training myself to drink more sophisticated
things. A girl can't really just drink Rolling Rock all the time," she
finished, holding up her glass.
"I'm very impressed," Kristina said, cutting a small piece of the sharp
cheddar and putting it on the crackers assembled around the plate.
She went to the refrigerator and rescued the bottle of wine Saoirse had
opened from the top shelf. Carrying it across the kitchen to the
cabinet, she pulled down an identical wine glass to Saoirse's and poured
a generous amount of the yellow liquid into her empty glass.
She downed a third of the glass in her first swallow and topped off the
glass again before returning the bottle to the cold confines of the
refrigerator. She was fully aware of the role she played within Delta
Sodality and risks associated with it, but she did not care for the
distasteful parts. Parts like getting rid of complicit and somewhat
innocent researchers. While she was now incredibly valuable to Delta,
she was also partly responsible for two deaths. As she took another
sip, she reminded herself that her world was also about creating safety
for herself and as of right now, she was untouchable.
The two sat down to eat and as they finished their meal, Kristina's mind
turned toward next steps. Despite her best efforts to get Saoirse to
take a semester off and keep a low profile, she had insisted on
finishing her degree. Kristina wanted to keep the drama to a minimum
and while she had originally thought having Saoirse out and about would
draw attention it dawned on her that if she was neck deep in schoolwork,
Saoirse would not only be focused, but also be much easier to keep track
of. It was decided that for at least the next six months, it was better
to give Saoirse anything and everything she needed so as not to
antagonize her into anything that might draw attention to the situation.
"Classes will start back up again soon, eh?"
"Yes, I start the week after next, I guess. I'm not sure how I do that
now that I'm not Rowan."
"It has been taken care of. You'll be enrolled as your new self as a
transfer student. You can make up whatever back story you like, perhaps
you transitioned over the summer? It won't matter in most of your
classes. Also, a few other tidbits you'll be pleased about.
"First, your landlord was very, ah...disagreeable. I'm afraid you can't
go back and live at your apartment so Octa has gotten you a new place.
Most of the affordable student housing was gone but Octa will pay for an
apartment in a building comprised of mostly corporate apartments just a
few blocks from campus. It is already furnished, and they'll have a
professional moving company go get your old stuff and bring it to the
new place. Your old lease has been taken care of.
Next, I have an old friend, a lawyer in Manhattan named Mike Heppner,
who will be negotiating with Octa Genomics on your behalf, if that is
alright with you. Octa does not want this incident to get into the news
for myriad reasons and they want to make sure you're as happy as you can
be. They will be paying for you to see a psychologist for at least the
next year and for as long after that as you want. Also, I will be
overseeing any tests done on you, so you'll have someone you know
working with you."
"So, you should be all set. I believe the settlement should most likely
set you for life. They will even take care of whatever is left on your
dad's mortgage. If you are ok with all that, I'll call him in the
morning and tell him to send you the client paperwork. Octa will pay
his fees as well, naturally."
"Wow, that would be awesome. I hadn't thought about a settlement, but I
guess that makes total sense. How much do you think we're talking?"
"For your complete silence? I'd say low eight figures at least."
Saoirse sat there in stunned silence. Kristina continued.
"So, about the "complete silence" part. One other thing that will be of
concern is your family. I know you don't have siblings and your mother
passed away. Since you're not a minor, Octa's HR and legal team isn't
allowed to contact your father, especially since you are of sound mind.
Do you think your father will be able to keep this secret? Have you
told him yet?"
"About becoming a woman. Ha! No. I'm not from the typical family most
of the student body is from. My dad works in a steel mill in Pittsburg.
To say he's a man's man would be fair."
Saoirse paused contemplating.
"I just honestly haven't been able to decide how to tell him. I figure
I have to send him an email first, then show up. No way he believes me
if I just show up at the door."
"I can't imagine how that conversation will go, Saoirse. It must be
very difficult to even contemplate."
Kristina reached her hand and put it on top of Saoirse's hand, rubbing
it gently. Her soft skin felt wonderful to touch and while Kristina was
trying to offer a gesture of support, a small, selfish part of her just
wanted to touch this beautiful creature sitting at her dining table.
She left her hand there, gently rubbing her thumb on the back of
Saoirse's hand.
"I just want you to fully understand, if you accept the payments from
Octa, your father can never say anything. For all intents and purposes,
Rowan is dead, well, at least until we can reverse this."
"I don't think I want you to try."
"Try what?" Kristina asked carefully, pulling her hand back slowly,
wondering if her affection was being called out.
"Try to turn me back. I think I want to stay this way."
"What do you mean? You want to stay a woman?"
"Yeah, I think I do. Listen, first off, its entirely possible Dr. Juno
and Dr. Teiresias will fuck something up and turn me into a mutant
mushroom or something. So long as I stay healthy, I think it would be
unwise to hope lightening will strike twice. Besides, if I'm honest, I
was never that great as a guy anyway. Now I'm model pretty and a
genius. I mean clearly this is an upgrade."
Kristina was astounded at first, though maybe not surprised. Rowan had
always been very rational, mature beyond his years it seemed, so why
wouldn't Saoirse be also. Better yet, as she did the calculus in her
head, she started to realize that if Saoirse didn't want to be changed
back, she could fully separate and compartmentalize her from Octa, Dr.
Juno and Dr. Teiresias. She wouldn't have to bring her back to the lab
or answer questions that would force her to have to build out what would
most assuredly be a large web of lies. How did that quote go?
Something about 'don't lie, you'll never have to remember anything'.
That was crucial in her line of work.
"Wow, that is certainly very brave of you. It isn't that easy being a
woman you know. Sexism, assault, even the cattiness of other women;
It's a tough world out there for us ladies. You're sure you want to
have to deal with that?"
"What choice do I have?"
The two sat for a bit, thinking about that very point. Kristina broke
the silence first.
"Well, the other thing the lawyer will do is to make sure your social
security number and everything else is associated with you. Apparently,
this will be no different than someone having a sex change or whatever
you call it. There is a lot of paperwork but apparently fairly
straightforward."
"So, I guess this really is the first day of the rest of my life, huh?"
Saoirse said smiling.

Minos got out and closed the car door when he saw Dr. Therapon park her
vehicle. She had parked, as he had hoped, in a spot where the parking
lot wall was in front of her car. Situated in this way, she would have
to climb over her car or the next to get away from him. As she got out
of her car and closed the door, he made sure to block her path of
escape.
Kristina saw him, too late, and recognized she was trapped.
"Minos, what are you doing here? Best we are not seen together."
"It is done. Dr. Juno will not be coming in today. Or any day."
"I see. All the more reason for us not to be seen together," she said,
her pulse quickening.
Minos, again clad in all black, closed the gap between them so he was
looking down at her.
"We can have no loose ends. That girl you made who has she told?"
"No one yet."
"But she will tell her family?"
"She only has a father left."
"Then we need to make sure he is out of the picture."
"Minos, before you do anything we can't reverse, stop and think about
this. We need Saoirse alive for some time to study her. The more we
know, the better able we are to use this technology for the betterment
of our employers. We need to keep Saoirse happy and focused on school
while we study her. Anything that disrupts that, like the death of her
father for example, invites the unknown. Who knows what she'll do if
her father dies and she finds out the two doctors responsible for her
transformation are also dead? No, it's better to control her by
controlling the factors and influences around her. Don't do anything
that upends the status quo."
Minos glared down at her. He clearly wasn't used to being talked to
this way by a woman. He was also not stupid. If he couldn't kill the
girl than he shouldn't kill her father, at least not yet.
"You will tell our employer why the man stays alive. If they do not
agree, I will not ask your permission."
He stepped very close to her, his leather jacket touching her own coat,
his stale breath colliding with her face.
"You make sure you do what you're supposed to, or I'll come visit you
again."
He glared at her a moment more than turned on his heel and walked back
to his car. Kristina didn't move, her heart still in her throat as she
watched him pull out and drive away.
