We had decided to stop at Dory's house first and let her parents know about our engagement. It seemed the right thing to do. I already knew we had their approval if Simone's comments were any indication.

"Hi, Mom, we're back," Dory called as we walked in the front door. I didn't hear a response, but a few seconds later Simone came out of the kitchen area and into the living room. She looked different.

"Mom ... are you all right?" Dory asked, seeing what I could now see. Her mother was red-eyed and looking very unhappy. She was shaking her head.

"No ... I'm not, dear," she admitted wearily, hugging her daughter to her.

"What's wrong? Where's Dad?"

"He's gone, Dory. He's left. We had a big fight and he left."

"Why, Mom? Why?"

"He's been seeing another woman. He's been cheating on me. I told him he had to choose. He ... he didn't choose me," she said, breaking down in tears.

"Oh, Mom. I'm so sorry. Why would he do that? You love each other. I know that for sure."

"I thought so too, but I was wrong. This other woman ... she's younger, sexier. I can't compete with that."

I felt like a spectator and I was almost about to leave them, giving them some privacy. Dory must have sensed that.

"Mom ... is this about the parties? The swap club?"

The look on her mother's face was one of complete shock.

"You know! How? How long have you known?" she said between sobs.

"A long time, Mom. Stevie and I both know."

"But you didn't say anything. What must you think of us?" she wailed.

"Mom, it's too late for that. Stevie and I thought about it for a long time. As long as it didn't interfere with your marriage and our home, we just kept it to ourselves. We didn't like it and we wouldn't do it, but we weren't going to interfere."

"Oh, I feel awful. You've known all this time and didn't say anything."

"What if we had? What would have happened? Would it have stopped Dad from cheating on you?"

"I don't know. I think it's been going on for a while and I was too blind to see it. When I discovered it, he said it was just a fling and he'd stop ... but he didn't. I caught him again this week and I told him to leave."

"Oh, Mom, I'm so sorry. This is so wrong. Do you know who this woman is?"

"Yes. She's one of the women that come to the parties. She's single. I can't believe she's serious about Bobby, but he's infatuated with her. She's barely your age."

"Is her name Merilee?" I asked, getting a sinking feeling.

"Yes ... how did you know?"

"It's a long story. I know her parents were involved in the parties and I know she was too because she told me so. It's hard to imagine she'd do this with the consent of her parents, but then, it's just as hard to believe she'd be involved with them in the first place."

"You know her?" Simone asked me. I could almost read her mind. She knew who Merilee was. The question in both our minds was: could I do anything about this situation?

"Yes, I dated her once. She's a real chameleon. She appears like a nice, quiet, co-ed on the outside, but obviously something very different on the inside. I didn't like what I learned about her, so I stayed away. She is very attractive and I can see why men would be drawn to her, but I think she's messed up in the head. She'd have to be to live two different lives."

"Do you think there's a chance she might be persuaded to leave Bobby alone?" Simone asked.

"I don't know," I shrugged. "If she's done this deliberately, then I'd say no. If it's just a fling like your husband said, then maybe. I'm going to call her and see what I can find out. She can't hurt me and she's already done enough damage to your family. It may be that I can't convince her, but I'm going to give it a try."

"Thank you, Steve. Whatever happens, thank you for trying. I'm so happy you and Dory are back together again," she said, smiling for the first time.

I wondered just how smart I was volunteering to get involved in this mess. It could turn very ugly if I wasn't careful. I was lost in those thoughts until Dory spoke up.

"Mom, Stevie and I are engaged. He asked me and I've said yes. It won't be right away, so don't panic. We're waiting to see what happens about my job applications."

"Oh ... that's wonderful. I can't think of anyone I'd rather see Dory marry than you, Steve. I'm very happy for both of you," she said, hugging her daughter and then me. "I hope I'll be included in the wedding planning."

"Of course. We haven't told his parents yet, so that's next. It will probably be sometime later this summer before we decide when, so there's no rush."

"Oh, you don't know how good this makes me feel," Simone said, genuinely happy for us. "I know you're going to have a long and happy life. And I'll be waiting for grandchildren to spoil too." Despite the tears, I was sure her smile and her happiness were genuine.

"I'm going to go with Stevie to his home to tell them now, Mom. I'll be back later on."

"Okay, Dear. I'll be here. Bring your bag in and I'll get started on the laundry."

"I'll get it," I volunteered, anxious to give them a few private moments.

When I returned, both women were in tears again, hugging each other closely.

"Do you really think you can talk to Merilee, Stevie?" Dory asked as we drove to my home.

"I don't know. I think she's trouble and your father probably doesn't realize it. I'm just wondering if her parents know about this. If they don't, they soon will."

Our greeting at my home was a good deal more upbeat. Dad wasn't home from work yet, but Mom, Nana and Pam were all present to welcome us back.

"Well, Mother, Nana, Pam, I have an announcement to make," I said with a big smile. "Dory and I are engaged."

The response was unanimous. "It's about time," they chorused, after which we were showered with congratulations.

"Hey, I'm finally going to get a big sister to go with my big brother. Isn't that great?" Pam enthused.

"I think the most important thing is that my son is going to marry a very lovely young woman who will make him happy." Mom was blinking back some tears at the time.

"Welcome to the family, Dory," Nana said as she hugged her. "You're going to make me a great-grandmother I hope."

"More than once, if we're lucky," Dory said, her upset and sorrow over her parents pushed to the back for a while.

My father arrived a few minutes later and was greeted immediately by Mom with the news. He was equally happy for us. That was the unanimous consent that we all hope for when events like this take place. Two happy families. Well, one-and-a-half, at least.

I was going to suggest we invite Simone over for dinner, but Dory thought it might be too soon. She wanted to go back home and be with her mother and give her moral support for a while. I couldn't argue that and asked her to wait while I made a phone call first.

"Hello, is this Mrs. White?"

"Yes, who's calling please?"

"My name is Steve Black and I'm a friend of Simone and Bobby Paulson. I'm sure you know them."

"Yes," she answered cautiously. "What's this about?"

"Are you aware that your daughter, Merilee, is having an affair with Bobby Paulson and that they have been conducting this affair for some time?"

"No! That's not true. She wouldn't do that. Why are you calling me about this?"

I'd weighed my options in talking to either Shirley White or Merilee and decided this direct and threatening approach would be the most effective. I just hoped I could pull it off. The truth was, I didn't have very much leverage with Merilee, so I was better off talking to her mother.

"Your daughter has convinced Mr. Paulson to leave his wife and be with her. I'm sure you wouldn't want her to be the cause of a messy and public divorce ... with all the gory details of how they met coming out."

"What do you mean, 'gory details?'"

"I mean the monthly swap meet club you and she attend in West Vancouver."

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said, trying to sound indignant.

"Mrs. Paulson certainly does, Mrs. White. I suggest that if you want to maintain some secrecy and privacy about your activities that you cooperate and convince your daughter that breaking up the home of a long time member of the club probably wouldn't go down very well with the other members. They could see that as a threatening move."

"Who are you and why are you involved in this?" she asked, still trying to keep her cool.

"As I said, I'm Steve Black. I went to school with Merilee and I know the Paulson family because I am aware of their involvement with the club. I'm also engaged to their daughter and she's aware as well. You might ask yourself if we found out about it, how many others might know?"

There was a silence on the line for several seconds before she responded.

"Very well," she said meekly, "I'll talk to my husband about it. If you're telling me the truth, I won't be happy with our daughter. We'll deal with it, trust me."

"I hope so, Mrs. White. I'm sure neither you nor the members would want your activities to become public knowledge."

I hoped that not-so-veiled threat would get her to do what was necessary to deal with Merilee. As far as I knew, Merilee had no job and no way to support herself. If she were isolated from Bobby, she'd pretty much have to toe the line at home. At least, that was my hope.

Altered Fates Agent Zulo

ALTERED FATES: AGENT ZULO by BobH (c) 2011 "Yes, baby, oh yes!!" I moaned, bending over the motel room desk as my partner took me from behind, grasping my hips and snorting as he rammed himself into me. Red-faced and breathing heavily, the effort seemed to be taking a lot out of him. Giving one last thrust that almost pushed me into the wall, he came with a final labored grunt. Having shot his load he pulled out of me and sat down heavily on the bed, sweating...

Altered Fates Triptych

Altered Fates: Triptych By BobH (c) 2003 Lucius Duvall checked his reflection and nodded his approval at what he saw. His hair and beard might have long since turned silver grey, giving him an illusion of age and wisdom that, in terms of age at least, was beyond his years, but both were immaculately trimmed, their edges razor-sharp. His suit was tailored to perfection, the trouser creases sharp and straight; his shoes polished to an almost mirror-finish; the carnation in...

Altered Fates The Things we do for Friends

Altered Fates: The Things We Do For Friends part 1 of 5 By Morpheus I stood in the school bathroom with my half soapy hands underneath the water faucet, grimacing as I rinsed them off. Then pausing for a second, I looked up and into the mirror that was hung on the wall in front of me. The same familiar 14 year old boy that I always saw looked back at me with a sour expression. His messy brown hair was in need of a cut and his nose still had blood dripping from it. "Shit."...

I couldn't have cared less for Barbie dolls and easy-bake ovens. I liked baseball a l...

Altered Fates Dennis

Altered Fates: Dennis (I know, its not the greatest name, but it works) By Morpheus ([email protected]) Walking home from work, I happened to look down, and saw a small brass colored medallion sitting in the gutter. Curiously, I pulled it out and held it up examining it. When I'd seen it, I'd hoped that it might be worth something, but as I looked at it, I realized that it was only a cheap piece of costume jewelry. Probably for kids or something. I noticed that there was a...

Altered Fates What Friends Are For

Altered Fates : What Friends Are For! By Paul1954 Clare looked across at her children, Ginny aged 7 and Jack aged 10, and sighed. She returned her attentions to the mirror in the hallway and finished touching up her lipstick. It was a typical Saturday morning at the Walter's home with Clare's husband Des sleeping off the results of a Friday night drinking spree spent with his co-workers and her children glued to the television watching the trash that passes for children's TV...

Altered Fates Auntie Em II

When I wrote Auntie Em, I had no intention of writing a sequel to it. However, after I finished it I started thinking about a few other ideas I had for the main characters and decided to use them as well. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, this one turned out quite a bit longer than I'd anticipated. For those of you who haven't read Auntie Em first, I suggest that you do before reading this. Altered Fates: Auntie Em II By Morpheus Emily felt bored....

Altered Fates A Promise Kept

Altered Fates: A Promise Kept By Jennifer Adams "Mike! Where have you been?" Connie asked. It was more of a demand rather than a question. She had been waiting and wondering where her husband had been for several hours. He wasn't normally a man who left and didn't come home. At least not until SHE came back to town. SHE was Mike's childhood friend. They had been neighbors growing up and played together all the time. Her name was Dana. "I'm sorry dear. I was over at Dana's...

Altered Fates Lyles Story

Lyle's Story by Grendel There are two sides to every story. Most of us would prefer to see the world in black and white, but the decisions we make are never as clear- cut as that. I know that I've made some enemies in my life, and perhaps with hindsight some of the pain that I've caused could have been avoided, but I've never deliberately acted with malice. I've just made some bad choices. I grew up in the shadow of my elder brother, Ken. He was the Golden Child, the...

Altered Fates Hollywood Agent

ALTERED FATES: HOLLYWOOD AGENT Chapter 1: Laura Jenson was tired. At least she acted as if she was tired, and those who knew her well knew that even though she was the star of over ten highly profitable movies over the last five years, that Laura couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Laura thanked her lucky stars everyday that the director's and the film editor she chose to work with, knew her acting faults and were only too glad to cover them up and make a ton of money from...

Twisted Fates Part 1

Twisted Fates, part one By Myrissa Silverleaf It was a typical day at work for Tom. Long hours for too little pay; but his sense of loyalty kept him at it far longer than was reasonable. The drive home was even worse than typical. Must have been an accident up ahead. He could see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles in the distance confirming his supposition. He sighed, realizing he'd be late for his television show and the "catch as catch can" dinner that was his usual fare. In...

Altered Fates Body Switch

Altered Fates: Body Switch By: Wayne Halderman Edited by: Heather Hi. I'm really William James Campbell. Or, should I say, I used to be. The truth is, I had my body stolen from me. I was 25 years old, 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 285 pounds. I had an athletic build, blonde hair and brown eyes. It all started with me seeing a picture of a girl in a pink dress and saying to myself, "She used to be a male Olympic swimmer before her body got stolen. Now she's a prissy...

Altered Fates My Best Friends Girl

Altered Fates: My Best Friend's Girl By Jennifer Adams I remember what I was doing when I received that fateful call. I was having sex on the beach with Jennifer Aniston. She was hot as ever and all over me. Just as we reached our mutual peak she opened her mouth to speak, but all I heard was a telephone ring. I suddenly became confused and then she disappeared. I mean like one moment she was there and the next pop, but I kept hearing this phone ringing. Then everything else began...

For Friends and Family Part 26 The Norns Intervene

For Friends and Family 26 - The Norns Intervene Blackness, wonderful peace, calm, pain free I remember not very much of the ten minutes or so after Brett and I were shot. I woke hearing the keening of someone very distressed, a low wailing; moaning sound that I realised was coming from me! With consciousness came pain, a horrible burning pain in my right leg, around the thigh, and then I heard a familiar voice saying, "Amy, can you calm Nicky down, so the ambulance crew can tend...

Altered Fates The Boss

Altered Fates: The Boss by Ellie Dauber copyright 1999 Author's Note: This is a VERY dark AF tale. It contains obscenity, the rape of two girls (males transformed by the Medallion), and the ravings of a very sick mind. (Not me, the narrator, and no cracks, please, about not being able to tell the difference.) Those who are offended by such stories are politely asked to go away and read something else. Those who question the validity and/or appropriateness of such stories are...

Altered Fates The Wife

Altered Fates: The Wife By Ellie Dauber (c) 2003 "Santiago Airlines Flight 2 is now arriving at Gate A. Santiago Airlines Flight 2 from Guatemala City and Mexico City now arriving at Gate A." The amplified voice echoed through the small rural airport. Edward Lassiter ran towards the gate. A large man, dressed in the new blue and gold Federal Airline Security Agency uniform, stopped him at the outer glass door. "I'm sorry, sir," the guard said. "You'll have to wait until the...

Altered Fates The Medallion comes to Fairview

Altered Fates - The Medallion comes to Fairview Part I. Revenge It was a hot August day as Justin pulled his classic, recently restored, 72' mustang into the parking lot of Fairview high school. The first day at a new school, was always tough, but another new school to start his senior year was just plain wrong, Justin thought as he pulled into a student parking spot. Although to be fair this was not as bad as the other times. His dad, Sergeant Major Sean Donovan, had just...

Altered Fates Stabbed in the Back

Altered Fates: Stabbed In The Back By: Regina Lawson I may have been selfish; in fact, I was selfish, I knew it. I wanted so much to make some sort of difference in the world that I overrode my wife?s objections and took the diplomatic position offered to me anyhow. I was to take up a minor position at our embassy in Panama which was responsible for American tourism, but that put me in touch with intelligence assets in the Central American region. My name is Stuart Barnes...

Altered Fates The Bitter Bridegroom

(Authors note: This story was inspired by femur's Lovingly Modified Romance Comic covers, specifically af023.jpg) ALTERED FATES: THE BITTER BRIDEGROOM By BobH (c) 2002 It was going to be the wedding of the year. Hollywood's new golden-haired wonder boy Tom Hudson was marrying supermodel Gina Carter, and the press couldn't get enough of them. It was a pairing that had synergy, they said, one in which their combined fame and glamor would be greater than the sum of that which...

Altered Fates The Vacation Souvenir

Altered Fates: The Vacation Souvenir by Tim Willows "Be careful!" June cried. Philip dismissed his wife's warnings with a backward wave of his hand. She stood anxiously on the dock as he swam farther and farther out into the lake. The early autumn sky was grey and many of the trees at the edge of the water were already bare. The water was freezing, and June had decided to stay out of it after only dipping her foot into it. Philip had laughed at her, shivering in her bikini...

Altered Fates The Directors Cut

Altered Fates: The Director's Cut A Tale of Deceit in Hollywood (what else is new?) by Liam Slade More at http://liamslade.com *** I remember the first time I saw a poster for Jennifer Raye. She had the kind of beauty that strikes one immediately and sort of radiates in his mind for weeks. I was walking down the street, on my way to a lunch appointment with Mitch Ruegger, the producer, when I saw her. Well, I was dreading the entire affair, since it was really my...

Altered Fates The Husband

Author's Note: This story was posted to Sapphire's TG Fiction List as "Catch As Catch Can." That was a working title because I couldn't think of a better one. I think "The Husband" is better. I also think (groan!) that a sequel called "The Wife" is going to haunt me until I write it. Now, if I can just think of the plot to go with the title. Such are the joys of authorship. Altered Fates: The Husband By Ellie Dauber (c) 2002 Most evenings, Edward Lassiter relaxed for about...
