I was a typical teenager, but that changed shortly after my 17th birthday. I inhaled some chemical laden smoke, which was the first of several pivotal events in my life.
Kevin Cantrell was the son of one of our town's wealthier behind the scene politicians. His parents provided him with just about anything that he wanted. The fire investigators learned that Kevin was a pyromaniac who set fires when he was upset and didn't get what he wanted. He satisfied his cravings to set fires when his parents disciplined him or refused to grant his wishes.
Following the department store fire, the investigators discovered that Kevin set over a dozen fires in his home and public places. However, his father used his influence and wealth to protect his son from arson charges.
During his early teenage years, Kevin started smoking and using drugs. His use of tobacco evolved into smoking marijuana. When that no longer provided him with the mental high that he wanted, he escalated to the use of amphetamines, barbiturates, and designer drugs. His druggie friends told the investigators that Kevin's mental state was a rollercoaster. They said he wanted to experience the ultimate high for his 21st birthday and to share it with as many people as possible.
During the weeks prior to his birthday, he experimented with smoking marijuana laced with designer drugs. One of the conclusions the investigators reached was Kevin decided to make some drug tainted, marijuana smoke bombs and ignite them in an enclosed public place. They learned that he made a number of purchases on the day before his birthday, which included a large amount of marijuana, several types of drugs, fire logs, and several quart cans of acetone.
Based on lab tests of items seized during a search of his home and fire scene, Kevin apparently dissolved the drugs in acetone. He placed the marijuana in a 5-gallon plastic bucket and saturated the marijuana with the drug-laced acetone. Once they were mixed, he spread the marijuana on a piece of plastic sheeting to dry.
That marijuana was nasty stuff for the acetone dissolved some of the plastic bucket and left holes in the plastic sheeting. His druggie friends said they refused to smoke that marijuana mixture, so the investigators suspected that Kevin wasn't all there.
Once the drug and plastic laced marijuana dried, he placed a fire log in each of several plastic trash bags. He then added a large amount of the marijuana to the bags and rolled them up.
On his birthday, Kevin took his homemade smoke bombs to our local mall and rode the escalator to the top floor of Brenner's Department Store; a two story building. Unfortunately, I decided to go shopping there for school clothes on that day, and the Men's department is on the top floor.
I was in the Men's changing room trying on jeans when Kevin placed his first smoke bomb on the carpet of the hallway that led to the emergency stairway. He opened the plastic bag, poured acetone in and around the bag, and set it on fire. He repeated this in front of the up and down escalators and then in front of the elevator.
Apparently, Kevin was an uncoordinated klutz or so far out of it on drugs that he didn't realize what he was doing. While setting the elevator fire, he drenched himself with the acetone while pouring it in the bag. When he set the bag on fire, he also set his clothes on fire. The acetone and his clothing were both highly flammable materials. Kevin did not survive the fire.
When I heard people screaming 'FIRE', I quickly put my clothes back on and headed for the escalator. The carpet in front of the escalators was on fire, and a heavy cloud of dark smoke rolled along the ceiling toward me. The flames were preventing people from getting to the escalators. A quick check showed that I couldn't get to the stairway either.
I saw over a dozen people trying to get off the top floor, and we were all coughing our lungs out from the smoke. I remembered a fire extinguisher in the store's Customer Service area and headed there to grab it. I thought that I could knock the flames down enough so we could get to the down escalator, which was still running. Grabbing the extinguisher, I headed for the escalator and shouted out for everyone to head that way. As I approached the escalator, I noticed a rather large, imposing man leaning on crutches and coughing as badly as I was. He saw the fire extinguisher and smiled.
