A couple of days later, Justin dropped in on the Anzacs.
Several of them jumped when Justin suddenly appeared. “Sorry, we need to get a bell so we can ring it before we appear,” Justin said with a big grin.
“I hope you don’t mind, but my old mate Diesel expressed a wish to see my family again. Would anyone mind if I borrow him? I can bring him back tomorrow.”
Trish laughed at the look of hope on Diesel’s face. “I don’t think it would be a problem, Justin. We are already months ahead of our own schedule thanks to you and the wizards.”
“We will need several weeks to sort ourselves out and probably longer to go through Lee’s data before we really start to explore. You can have him for a couple of days if you wish. I believe the basic mineral surveys he was going to do are already done for him by Lee.”
Justin smiled, “We tend to help each other a lot. Lee is a big believer in that a little help can go a long way. She tends to steer you in a direction and then lets you go.”
“If she offers a suggestion, I do suggest you listen. She is one scary smart woman and makes plans decades ahead, not days. We believe she had fore-sight.”
“Oh, for that matter, if my sister Kim visits, she has future visions as well, so it would probably pay to listen to her too.” Justin turned to Diesel, “So ready to go visiting the neighbours?”
“What do I need to take?” Diesel asked.
“Nothing mate, that’s what replicators are for. Oh, by the way, Lee had us dump the leftovers from the land clearing in your replicator, so it shouldn’t need filling for a while. Have fun guys.” With the parting information, Justin touched Diesel, and they both disappeared.
Barry couldn’t help himself, and he pulled up the stock menu on the replicator. He then looked through the menu in more detail than his first cursory glance.
He turned to the others, “There is enough material in here to keep us in whatever we need for months. And the things they have put in it for us to make are a hell of a lot better than what we had on ours.”
“Damn, I love having wizards for neighbours,” Colin said.
The others all agreed. So far, they had been very comfortable in the lovely big dome home. Barry had fallen in love with the computer system and Francis their cook was in love with the kitchens and huge walk-in fridges and freezes. They still hadn’t made a huge dent in the food Lee had left them.
Trish was just amazed that the wizards and the other people here had gone to so much trouble to make them feel welcome. Gary and Robert had both contacted then already to make sure they were settled in.
They had decided to send the ship back for more personnel since they didn’t need the crew. The captain had reported that Lee had visited the ship and had modified it a little. They should be back at the Moon in three weeks.
Robert had already contacted the leaders of the countries in the Anzac block, and they were busy picking a second team to send. Trish surmised that they would pack them in, as they now had land that could be utilised for settlement without affecting the outer ecology.
They also had the second done ready for a mining team. She had asked for more biological and environmental scientists to be located at the second dome to investigate how that area could be used.
They had a lot of work to do in the next couple of months.
Diesel blinked and found himself in another town.
He stumbled, and Justin grabbed him. “Shit, sorry mate, I always forgot to warn people about the gravity. It takes a little to get used to.”
“Where are we?” Diesel said, looking around at the town as his balance settled.
“This is Futura. It’s on Utopia, where the crew first settled before they built the compound on Harmony. We’re here to pick up the kids, and then we are going back to Harmony, but to the Wizards Retreat. You are going to love the place.”
Justin walked in the front doors and down a corridor. “This is their version of a High School. They teach very differently here to our old schools. Our apartment is upstairs. Ariel said that she, Tyson and Barbie are still down here.”
Diesel followed Justin in to find the girls were playing in a band. “We often play in the diner or the new Community Centre for the locals, and Lee pays us, so the kids get regular pocket money.”
“Ariel and her friends are practising. They are going to put on a concert next week in the Community Centre so I’ll see if you can come back for that.”
Diesel shook his head, “You talk about going from one planet to another like it’s a trip to the shops?”
Justin grinned, “Yeah, but it’s even better, I don’t have to drive in traffic or catch a bus.”
Diesel had to laugh. He had considered Justin one of his best friends back in Uni. He was three years older and had been surprised when he realised just how young Justin was. For the first year, they hadn’t had much to do with each other.
Early in their second year, he had been put on a group project with Justin. He had been considered one of the bright and upcoming, but Justin consistently got top grades and often piped him for the top mark. He had become curious about the unassuming but very tall young man.
He learnt that Justin had become saddled with his half brothers and sisters and he started wondering if Justin would pull out of Uni. But he did the opposite, taking on an even greater workload. Justin had invited the group to his place to study, so they went.
Diesel’s admiration for Justin had only increased when he realised Justin ran his home well. The other kids obviously adored him, and he effortlessly steered them through their homework and getting dinner on the table, while his group worked.
Justin told the group the best way to do their assignment was for them to gem hunting with him. The kids would be on Easter school holidays in a week, so it was a good time to go.
In Diesel’s opinion, it was the best bloody camping trip he had ever been on. He had gotten to go on three more and had loved them too. He reckoned the group learnt more about geology in that first trip with Justin and his family than they had in the nearly two years they had been studying.
Justin made the world of geology come alive for him that week. He made the bush and being one with nature a reality as well. Justin was very passionate about conservation, he learned. The whole group had loved listening to his Gran’s stories about the bush.
When the family pulled out their instruments and started playing and singing, it was just magical. Diesel was bloody sure he’d only got lucky with one of the girls from his group after she realised Justin wasn’t interested.

He had really missed Justin and his family when his parents wanted him to move to Sydney. He had been offered a position to join a program being conducted by UNSEC. It was his best chance at a job, so he had to go.
Now here he was, in another solar system and Justin was a bloody wizard. It was weird how things worked out.
They entered the room, and the band was just starting another song, so they sat down to listen. He had little trouble picking out Ariel, Tyson and Barbie. The Ubobo’s had a strong family resemblance.

“At least she had taste,” Justin said and patted his friend on the back and gave him a big grin. Diesel grinned back. When Justin said it was okay, it was okay. He had learnt that a long time ago. He was very relieved.
“Is it going to happen like that for the rest of us?” Tyson asked.
Justin shrugged, “Probably, you remembered what happened when Gemma and I introduced our twins to her twins.” Tyson nodded in agreement.
