She was eager to go home, or to what would be her home for the next few weeks. She eagerly ate her dinner that evening before finally going to sleep hours later. The next day arrived, she had breakfast and a nurse came with her wheelchair. It was fitted with a support for her leg. Another nurse came up to help her out of bed. The left one was put in a bag along with her other belongings. Kelly was then helped out of the bed and onto the wheelchair. The nurses then made adjustments to it to make sure she was comfy. "All we have to do now is wait for the doctor to come and see you," said one of the nurses. Miriam had decided to spend the night at home and therefore wasn't with Kelly until later that morning. By the time she arrived, Kelly had been pushed up and down the ward a few times. "Got your wheels then?" she said when she saw Kelly. "Yes mom. Just waiting for the doctor to show up," she said. "Well, I've sorted a few clothes out for you. We'll take them round to Paula's once you've arrived there." "Thanks mom," said Kelly, then turning to the nurse pushing her. She brought this problem up to the other nurse. "Ok. We'll see if we can't get a commode for her," she replied. "Thanks. Not many houses with downstairs toilets now," said Miriam. When Kelly returned from the toilet, the doctor was waiting. "Ready to go, I see?" he said. "Well, I think I won't stand in your way." "When do you want her to come back?" asked Miriam. "In 3 weeks, just for a check up. If you have problems, don't hesitate to call us," he said. "How are we getting to Paula's?" asked Kelly. Her answer came moments later: Mark had arrived. "We're taking you in the car," said Miriam. Mark took the helm and pushed Kelly out. Kelly said goodbye to the nurses and was soon by the car. Miriam found herself being presented with the promised commode. Mark helped Kelly onto the back seat and strapped her in. He then folded the wheelchair and put it in the boot. Miriam soon arrived and put the commode in with it. "Just got her appointment card," she told Mark. "What was that you just put in the back?" asked Kelly. "Your own personal toilet," said Miriam. Alex had been trying to find a suitable ramp in the time he had available before setting off for work. Joanne was pressed for time too, and soon had to leave for college. She sat sideways so that her leg could be rested. "That's better, thanks," she said. "Though I don't want to be a prisoner here. I'd still like to go out if possible." "Your personal chauffeur at your service," said Paula. "Now, about a few other things." "As I understand it, I won't be able to take a shower or bath, so how am I supposed to wash?" said Kelly. "We have discussed this and it was suggested we should bring a bowl of soapy water in here and give you a wash with a flannel," said Laura. "In front of everyone?!" she replied. "Just myself or Paula if you wish," said Laura. "Oh, that's ok then. But I would prefer Paula," she grinned. Laura looked at her and smiled. "No surprises there then." So, Paula and Kelly chatted away while Laura did a bit of housework. It was all interrupted by Miriam and Mark's return. They had brought a selection of clothes for Kelly, plus a few items such as her toothbrush, a bottle of shampoo/conditioner and her hairbrush. "All settled in, I see?" asked Miriam, noting Kelly seated on the sofa. "Yes, very cosy. I might move in permanently," she smiled. "With my one leg stretched out, wearing a skirt will risk showing what I have on underneath. Then with trousers, it's about getting them over my left leg." Paula went into the kitchen to help Laura with dinner and Alex and Joanne spent some time getting Kelly's account of the past few days. "The moment of impact is just a blank," she told them. After dinner, which was held both in the kitchen and the living room: Paula and Joanne sat in the living room with Kelly while Laura and Alex sat in the kitchen. After dinner, Paula went upstairs and fetched her mobile phone. "Ok, don't stay on here too long," she told Kelly. "I need to top up my credit." Paula switched on the phone and called Alicia. "It depends on whether her parents show up too." As the evening grew old, Laura decided it was time to see Kelly get some sleep. Laura brought the commode closer and removed the seat. She then helped Kelly with her clothes before helping her sit. This was actually the second time that day that Kelly had used it. Laura had brought a tissue roll down for Kelly to use afterwards. She then fetched a basin of water and soap for Kelly to wash her hands in. Once Kelly was finished, she was helped back on to the sofa. Laura then got the pillows and blankets. Moments later, Paula came in. She was wearing her nighty and ready for bed. "Aren't you going to bed?" asked Laura. "I just want to say goodnight to Kelly," said Paula. "Oh go on then," said Laura. Kelly just smiled as Paula went up and kissed her. "Goodnight my princess," said Paula, before heading (reluctantly) back upstairs. "Goodnight," said Kelly. Contrary to what she had said earlier, Paula took her teddy to bed with her. It wasn't much of a replacement for her preferred bed companion, but it had to do. Laura was the first up next morning and she was careful not to wake Kelly. She checked the living room to see if she was awake and saw that she was still asleep. With that, she went to the kitchen and made breakfast for herself. Soon, she heard knocking from the living room. Kelly was awake and flipping the lid on the commode with her right arm. "Morning Kelly," said Laura. "Morning Laura," said Kelly. "I need to go." "Ok, I'll be right with you," said Laura. Alex and Joanne, with work and college to go to repectively, were the next ones up. Both did say morning to Kelly before leaving. "I'm not prepared to live on this sofa for six weeks!" "Ok, we'll go into town," said Laura. "We'll help you get ready." So, after Paula had spent a few minutes brushing Kelly's hair, she helped Laura in getting Kelly dressed. Kelly wasn't prepared to let them do all the work and did as much as possible with her free arm as possible. After she was placed into her wheelchair, Paula raced upstairs. She had yet to get ready, having yet to put her shoes on and do her own hair. "I'll put on some make-up while I wait," said Kelly. "Pass me my bag please." Laura gave Kelly her handbag and she managed to retrieve a few items. Laura then held her compact mirror while Kelly applied the lipstick and mascara. Paula was down minutes later and ready to go. And remember, we have got all day," said Laura. * * * The walk into town was a slow one as Paula didn't want to wear herself out by pushing Kelly too quickly. But as Laura had said, they had all day and were in no hurry to get back. The only problems they had were getting into and around shops. Some people didn't seem to notice Kelly in her wheelchair. Laura cursed under her breath as other shoppers decided that she was holding the door open for them and walked through. "Some people are so lazy!" she said. "They see you going to the door and they wait for you to open it! They even have the cheek to say thank you!" When they decided to have something to eat, they decided to have a take away. Laura bought Cornish pasties for each of them and they sat in the park to eat them. The park also had a disabled toilet too, so Kelly took advantage of the opportunity. That Jane came in today. The driver who knocked you down," said Miriam. She went to the back of the shop and came back with a bouquet of flowers. "She wanted you to have these," she said, handing the flowers to Paula, who passed them onto Kelly. "That's nice of her," said Kelly. "I'll put them in a vase when we get back," said Laura. "But how did she know you worked here?" "She must have recognised my uniform," said Miriam. They decided to continue their window shopping, not wanting to prevent Miriam from working. As they continued to peruse the shops, they discovered more familiar faces. "Hi Linda, hi Kevin," said Kelly, noticing their friends standing over by a shop window. "How about you?" asked Kevin to Paula. "I did hear about the race. Not a bad result I suppose." "I don't know," said Paula. "Webber had to retire, so that was a good thing." Kevin turned his attention back to Kelly. "So what made you have an argument with a car?" "Hasn't Linda told you?" asked Kelly. "I did tell him," said Linda. I have got to go back for a check up, but I suspect that this will only come off in 6 weeks time," said Kelly. "Well, I hope you get better. Can't bear to see you like this," said Kevin. "She will," said Paula. "She's got true grit." Laura had gone to the chemists and didn't know until she found them, that they had found their friends. "Found some friends I see?" she said. "We'd better be going," said Linda. "Glad to see you're getting out." "Bye," said Kevin. They watched as they left hand in hand. "Romance is everywhere," said Laura. "Had enough of shopping yet?" "Ok, we'll head back home," said Laura. They started to make their way back but stopped off at a bakery on the way to get some cakes. "We'll have them when we get back," said Laura, who had bought cakes for Alex and Joanne too. After a slow walk back, they arrived home. Laura opened the front door and put the pieces of wood down so that Kelly could be brought back in. "I'll put the kettle on," said Laura. "Could do with a drink. Alex arrived moments later and sat in the living room to catch up on reading the day's newspaper. Laura had gone to the kitchen to get started on the dinner. "I wonder when Alicia will turn up?" asked Kelly. "She might go home first to get changed," said Paula. "I used to as a boy, but it was just the shirt and tie I used to take off then." "I take it you changed all your clothes since joining our side?" said Kelly. Paula just smiled. She didn't want to say anything as Alex was in the room. She didn't like putting boys down out of respect for her former self, but her answer to Kelly's question was yes. * * * Laura was cautious that afternoon about dinner. She wasn't sure how many she would be catering for. She wasn't sure about whether Alicia would be turning up alone or with her parents. Alicia wasn't the first one to arrive though. It was Miriam. She wasn't here to stay for dinner however, she just wanted to check on Kelly and to see if there was anything else she wanted from home. "Can you bring my mobile phone?" asked Kelly. "I don't want to use Paula's all the time." "Sure thing," said Miriam. "I'll bring it round tomorrow." It wasn't long after Miriam had left that Alicia did show up - with her parents. You must be joking," said Alicia. "Excuse me, but are you stopping for dinner?" asked Laura. "No, we just came round to see how Kelly was," said James. "So how did it happen?" Paula was once again called upon to recount the events of Monday which had led to Kelly's current predicament. "So, that's that," said Paula. "Kelly and I are free to see one another whenever we can." "I'm happy to hear that, but this is not a good way to spend the first few weeks of your summer holidays," said Mary. "At least I'll be rid of these casts before July is out," said Kelly. Paula, upon request, went upstairs and fetched her teddy bear down. "Meet Victoria," she said, presenting the bear to Alicia. Kelly leaned to get a look and chuckled. "She looks so cute when she blushes." Mary and James hung around for a few more minutes while Alicia started to talk about her mock exams. "No. It's just that I'm still learning a few things about being a girl," replied Paula. "I know what you mean. After all those years learning to be a boy, you're now having to learn some entirely different lessons." "I should have mentioned it earlier. I saw my future self the other day," said Paula. "You did? I thought you stopped seeing her when your changes were complete?" said Laura. "I thought so too, but I saw her in my mirror," said Paula. After a while, Laura put some of the sauce in a dish and kept it to one side. She then added the mushrooms to the main batch. "Now, pasta is quick to cook. Just get some water, put a pinch of salt into it, and bring it up to the boil. Then add the pasta and let it simmer. It wasn't long before the dinner was being served. Joanne and Alex had theirs in the kitchen while Laura and Paula ate in the living room with Kelly. Kelly had had hers served in a large dish. She managed to eat with the bowl on her lap, using her left hand to keep it steady. "So, dreaming about your hair again?" she asked Paula. "That's my job." "Can't help it," said Paula. "I just happened to see my future self in my dressing table mirror." She went on to tell Kelly what she had already told Laura. "So, my plaster casts were foretold?" asked Kelly. "She never told me that. I never knew about the accident. She never told me the future, apart from me becoming a girl," replied Paula. "But about my hair, I want it long. You certainly want me to grow it out, so you might as well say, I'm growing my hair for both of us." "And I can't deny you'll look wonderful with long hair," said Laura. Paula smiled broadly. For her, Paul's life was now just a memory. She was a lesbian girl in a loving relationship and the future was now looking rosey. "Oh I forgot, did you want some garlic bread?" asked Laura to Kelly. "No thanks. That's something else I don't like," said Kelly. "That's a relief!" said Paula. "I don't like it either." "At least there won't be need for mints for either of you," said Laura smilng.
