She spent Saturday evening watching her television for news on the qualifying sessions but found little. She would have to wait for the live coverage of the race for news. "You can tell me, I won't say anything to Linda," said Paula. "It must remain a secret, I just hope she likes it," said Kevin. "Ok, but I'm sure she will like it," said Paula. "You got her anything?" asked Kevin. "Not yet. Going into town with Kelly tomorrow to do just that. Kelly is in the same boat." "Fair enough," said Kevin. "Now let's get down to the race." The Belgian Grand Prix had the longest circuit of all. 44 laps, each beginning with a razor sharp hairpin. "Lets hope the start is incident free," said Paula. "That hairpin right on the start is nasty." But it wasn't. A number of cars went out of the race as the drivers looked for the best possible start. "Even Monaco doesn't have an hairpin yards from the start," said Paula. "Come on Hamilton!" The race was tight with Hamilton and Webber fighting for the all important win. Hamilton had built up a 10 second lead and was coming across back enders for the third time. "I just hope Webber has trouble when he catches them," said Paula. Hamilton had lost 2 seconds in the process of overtaking them. But Paula and Kevin were all smiles as Hamilton took the chequered flag. Webber's second place meant that he still held top spot in the points table though. "Not stopping for dinner?" asked Laura as Kevin made ready to leave not long after the race had finished. "I promised I'd help dad wash the car," he replied. "Bye then." "In a hurry, to say the least," said Laura. "Oh well." For the remainder of Sunday, it proved to be boring after all. Paula continued to read Lord of the Rings and after giving up on that, decided to think once more about Linda's present. It led her to ask Laura something. "Mom. By the time she left the bathtub, her fingers were wrinkled. She was however, feeling so more relaxed. It was just finding one that Paula could afford. Kelly had gone over to the toiletries and came back with a number of loose items. "Would you believe they are cheaper like this?" she told the others. Laura then took them to a discount gift store for some birthday cards and wrapping paper. In the end, Kelly got a gift bag to put her items in. "Just have a wash, will you please," said Laura. Paula was first to the bathroom, then heading straight to her room to get changed. As well as the aqua green dress, she opted to wear some tights too. After getting dressed, she went over to her dressing table, tidied up her hair, applied some make-up and put on some drop earrings and her favourite necklace. She left her room and went to see if the others were ready yet. She noticed that Laura and Alex were still getting ready in their room while there was definitely something going on behind Joanne's door. "I'm ready," she said to her parents. They all went in and found Linda seated at a table near the bar. As soon as Linda saw Paula, she got up to greet them. "Thanks for coming!" she said to Paula. Her friends were wondering which of the presents was Kevin's. But Linda had decided to leave her presents for now. She went over to the DJ's table and borrowed his mic. "Hi everyone. John then got a camera and asked Linda and her friends to gather for a photo. * * * Once the photo had been taken, the cake was cut and served. Everyone sat down again to eat and talking once again resumed. "I'm wondering if Kevin's present is actually a present at all," said Alicia. "Or at least not in the physical sense." "You're not suggesting he has written a song for me?" asked Linda, looking worried. "I hope not," said Mike. "If you thought my jokes were bad." Mike's comments made everyone at the table look worried. "Whatever it is, I hope he doesn't keep us in suspense for much longer," said Paula. "You're telling me," said Linda. "I'm the eventual recipient!" They looked over to the other tables and noticed that Kevin was still with his parents. Even John and Janet were looking across. "Of all the days, he decided to ignore me now," sighed Linda. The music started once more and everyone decided to take to a bit more dancing. Kevin was still keeping away from Linda, much to her annoyance. After a while, he glanced over and saw the dirty look she was giving him. He looked worried sick. After another talk with his parents, he headed towards where the DJ was playing the music. "Now what is he up to?" asked Kelly as Kevin walked over to the DJ. "Can you please stop the music. I have an announcement to make," he said to the DJ. "Sure," said the DJ, now handing Kevin the microphone. "I just want to say a few words," he said to the others, who were now all focused on him. "I just want to congratulate Linda on her 17th birthday, and thank her for coming into my life." Linda was starting to smile again. Soon, the music did restart and Kevin and Linda spent the rest of the party in each others arms. "I'm glad she said yes," said Paula to Kelly. "I think he would have needed a doctor had she said no." After the mass trip to the toilets, they all gathered in the car park. Paula and Kelly were both admiring Linda's ring. "Not as big as yours, but still beautiful," said Linda. "So, that's two weddings that need planning now," said Kelly. "Sure is," said Kevin, now joining them. "One thing, where did you get the money?" asked Paula. "My dad got it. It was he and my mom who suggested I pop the question," he replied. "Come on. There's one more thing left for you two," said John to Kevin and Linda. "One more thing, dad?" asked Linda. "They saw Kevin getting into Linda's car last night," explained Laura. "And our girls could only think of one reason why." "That they were going to spend the night together?" asked Miriam. Laura, Paula and Kelly stood to one side as Miriam dealt with the customer. "Mom, we were right. Linda and Kevin did it!" said Paula. "She phoned us a few minutes ago," added Kelly. "Oh, so did they enjoy it?" asked Laura. "Linda was certainly over the moon about it," said Kelly. "She now owes Paula for it." Laura looked at Paula. "I sort of played matchmaker and Linda is now planning a way of thanking me," said Paula. "Like playing a part at her wedding?" suggested Laura. "I suppose so," said Paula. "Though I imagine she'll want Kelly to be involved too." "I should imagine they'll want both of you there regardless," smiled Laura. "But I'm really happy that they are serious about one another." "Now talking of serious relationships, what about us?" asked Kelly. "Soon hopefully, very soon," said Laura. "And in any case, I've invited your parents to dinner on Wednesday." "Ok," said Kelly.
