The good thing was that she managed to get one which could carry wheelchairs. So it was, that Laura arrived at the hospital with Kelly and Paula in good time. "I've brought Kelly Walker here for her appointment," said Laura to the receptionist. She handed over the appointment card. "Ok, the doctor will be with you shortly. "Why thank you," said Laura. With that, she found a seat and waited along with Kelly and Paula. They were soon called to a doctor's office. "So, Mrs Walker," said the doctor. "We just want to see how Kelly's arm and leg are healing." "Sorry, but I'm not Kelly's mom. I'm looking after her as both her parents are working," said Laura. "Oh, never mind. We just need to X-ray her," said the doctor. He went over and had a closer look at Kelly. "So, everything fine?" he asked her. "As fine as can be," she replied. "Apart from being unable to walk." "Well, in a few weeks, that shouldn't be a problem." A nurse entered the office and told the doctor that the X-ray room was ready. With that, Kelly was taken to the X-ray room while Laura and Paula remained in the office. A while later, Kelly was back. Her arm and leg were now in new casts but apparently lighter ones. Her arm cast now gave her more leverage in her hand and elbow. "Her bones are mending well and don't need further alignment," said the doctor. "We've put new casts on but she'll still need to keep her leg still." "Like I could move it," said Kelly. "Felt good for the moments when my leg was free. Still, got more movement in my left arm." "So, just so I can let her parents know, when do you want to see her again?" asked Laura. "We'll see her again in 3 weeks, hopefully by then, her bones will have fully healed," said the doctor. They all said goodbye to the doctor and headed back to the reception. Laura arranged for a taxi and also got the appointment confirmed. It would actually be on a Wednesday instead. "3 weeks and 2 days," sighed Kelly. "Well, if it will see me free of casts, then it'll be worth an extra two days." "3 more weeks before Kelly and I can make beautiful love together," said Paula. It said that something would help her pass the time while waiting for her fortune to come into fruition. She would soon find out. Paula had been wondering whether her parents were still doing it each night. They had seemed to have cut back on it over the last week or two. Wednesday night came and there was definitely something going on. Thursday morning. Laura came down looking worse for wear. "You ok mom?" asked Paula. "Yes, fine," she replied. Friday saw the evening eat out turn in to a cause to celebrate Laura's pregnancy proper. After that, Laura decided to put all talk of the baby on hold until the tell tale signs became clear. As for looking after Kelly, she started her period on the Sunday. As with washing her, Paula found her role in the matter reduced at times to mere spectator. It didn't please her in the slightest. "When she is back on her feet, I'll let you take a shower together, alright?!" said Laura. "These next few weeks are going to go so slow," grumbled Paula. Even Kelly was feeling sour at the way Laura was stopping Paula from helping in the washing and in this case, helping change her pads. "I insist Paula change my next pad!" she demanded. June came to a close and for Kelly, that was good news. It had been a month since the accident and there was just 2 more weeks before her casts could be removed. Laura kept looking at her stomach, as though still finding it hard to believe that a new life had just been created inside her. But for now, she just continued with the daily routine. "When my hair is long enough, I wouldn't mind trying a few different styles," said Paula. "By all means," said Kelly. "You'll be spoiled for choice." "I might go for a nail technician's job, just for the moment," said Paula. "After being told many times that I'm a natural at doing nails." "I thought to be honest, that you would want to work at a garage," said Kelly. "Though being a nail technician would be a good idea." "I don't think there's any doubt that Paula will find herself working with cars one day, but as you've said, just to get some money in your pocket," said Laura. "The government doesn't fund your education after you turn 18. " "So, how's Joanne coping?" asked Paula. "She's 18 but she isn't paying." "She wasn't 18 when she started the course," said Laura. "If you apply for a new course and you'll be 18 in September, you have to pay. Many take out student loans to pay for them." "And you need a well paid job to pay them off," said Alex entering the room. "Most students are able to defer payments due to a low income." "And as far as I know, Jo will be looking for work next year. I think her course requires it," said Laura. The 16th July couldn't come quickly enough, though Paula found herself wanting it over for other reasons than to see Kelly back on her feet. "Nails for sure. Get my legs waxed, have my hair done," she replied. "What about your ears?" "I'm afraid not. I would love to have them done, but I want them done the once. And seeing that I've still got another year at school, I'd prefer to wait," said Alicia. "Ok, I'll tell my mom. Kelly will be back on her feet by then," said Paula. "Oh of course, isn't it tomorrow?" asked Alicia. Paula had told her the date almost as soon as they found out. "Yes and she can't wait. Bit of a double celebration for us," said Paula. "Could do, as we break up on the Thursday," said Alicia. "I'll get back to you." Paula went back to the living room and told Kelly and Laura. "So, no ears," said Laura. "I can see her point." "Paula is now amongst her rightful kind, and enjoying it," said Kelly. All thoughts of hair and nails were put to one side however as the next day would see Kelly getting her life back to normality. Again, Laura was put in charge of taking her to the hospital and Paula once again joined them, even if her period hadn't fully cleared up. "Hopefully, I'll be leaving this wheelchair at the hospital," said Kelly. "I hope so too," said Laura. As like last time, they ordered a taxi and got a refund on arrival. They also took a pair of shoes and socks for Kelly, with the chances of her leaving on her feet being good. They also took the commode too, since that was just lent to them too along with the wheelchair. "Ok, here to get back on your feet?" asked the doctor to Kelly. "Yes, and be able to take baths and showers again," she replied. "Well, just to make absolutely sure, we'll just do some more X-rays first," he added. Laura and Paula once again waited in the office while Kelly went to the X-ray department. After a while, Kelly returned with the doctor. "Her bones have fully healed. We'll get her casts removed straight away," said the doctor. Unlike last time, her casts had been kept on. This was because last time, they had decided to change the casts anyway. The current casts were to be left on until her bones were deemed fully healed. Kelly was taken into a room with a bed. Beside the bed were a pair of handrails. Paula and Laura watched as a nurse removed the casts in turn using a pair of cutters. First the leg was freed followed by her arm. "That feels so much better," said Kelly as the air brushed against her freed limbs. "Try bending your knee," asked the nurse. Kelly tried and winced. "It feels sore." "It will, as the muscles have gone to sleep," said the nurse. "But trying to move them is the only way to wake them." With the nurse helping, Kelly started flexing her left knee. More stiff than sore, the life soon returned to it. Her ankle also needed physiotherapy too. Once her leg muscles had been flexed a number of times, the time came for her to get back on her feet. This was where the rails came in. Kelly was not sure about putting any weight on her left foot as the nurse helped her off the bed and towards them. With the rails for support and her left arm now strong enough to help, Kelly took her first steps in well over a month. "I'm walking again!" she cried. "Try it without holding the rails," said the nurse. Kelly tried but found herself holding the rails every few steps. It was a slow procedure but she was determined to walk unaided before she left the building. Before long, she was walking the distance of the rails unaided. Confident of her progress, the nurse led her outside the room and into the corridor. The doctor by now, was watching her every step. "Your mind just needed a refresher course in walking," he said. After saying goodbyes, Kelly walked to the reception with Laura and Paula. Laura went over to order a taxi while Paula helped Kelly to a chair. "Thanks, I need to sit down," said Kelly. "I just need to build my strength up." "In your own time," smiled Paula. "I think we'll go to town instead," said Laura. "I'll get you some lunch, seeing that we've been here a while." They had, for Kelly's walking lessons had taken over an hour at least. Kelly knew that Laura had an extra reason for wanting to go to town, and she was more than happy to go. After a short taxi ride, they arrived in the town centre and headed straight to the place where Kelly wanted to go. "Hi Laura," said Trish. "I take it you want to see Miriam, or do you have some washing for us?" "I want to speak to Miriam, or more to the point, I have someone with me who wishes to see her," said Laura. Miriam was quite aware of who it was. Still, she couldn't hide the joy of seeing her daughter walking into the shop. She had to come from behind the counter to speak to her. "Mom!" said Kelly, walking slowly but steadily towards her. "You're back on your feet!" said Miriam embracing her daughter in a hug. "She just needs to take it steady for now," said Laura. "I understand," said Miriam. "So, does this mean you wish to come home now?" Kelly looked over to Paula. "I would, but I still want to spend time with Paula," said Kelly. "I just want to sleep in a bed." "What about mine?" asked Paula. "When I'm back to full strength on my feet," said Kelly. "But nothing will stop me from wanting to spend a night with you." With that, the two girls embraced and kissed one another. Kelly then turned to Miriam. "I don't mind sleeping on a sofa tonight," she said. "So, you still want to stay at their house?" asked Miriam. "For the moment," said Kelly. "Shall we go and get some promised lunch?" asked Laura. "Yes, lets go then," said Kelly. "Bye mom." Laura stopped behind for a few more moments. "I think there is no doubt now that those two will be planning the day now," said Laura. "The wedding?" asked Miriam. "Well, maybe, but I mean their first night," said Laura. "Of course. So, our place or yours?" "Who cares? They'll be happy where ever," said Laura. "All they need is a certain tool." "You mean a 'cherry picker' of sorts?" asked Miriam. "Exactly," smiled Laura. "I'll try and get one in the next few days." "Ok, but your place may be best. And secondly, they may want some privacy," said Miriam. "I think they deserve some," said Laura.
