The following week saw Paula and her family go away, missing Kelly's birthday in the process. This still hurt Paula to a degree, even though Laura had told her that the Walkers were inviting her over on the Sunday after they came back, with a sleepover included. The day she found those out was still a fortnight away, and rather than step foot in her old school again, she had arranged for her results to come in the post. The day went well, with Kelly around as usual. The company was made 3 when Alicia came round unexpectedly for the day. They found a few DVDs downstairs that appealed to Alicia and Kelly, seeing that James Bond was a definite no. Alicia left at three, while Kelly departed, as usual, when Miriam came to collect her. "After the way you were today," said Joanne. "Paul is most definitely gone." Paula found herself agreeing to a point. She certainly lived like a girl now. But Alex had found something that resurrected the last remnants of Paul. If she could get some success in go-karting, she knew her chances of being a rallycar driver would improve. Because of her impatience, Sunday seemed to drag. Even though another Formula 1 race helped beat the boredom, she needed a session in the kitchen, helping Laura with the dinner, to help pass more time. "I wonder if I'll need any equipment tomorrow?" she asked. "I should imagine they'll have all the equipment you need," said Laura. "I just hope I'm not the only girl to show up though," sighed Paula. "I'm with you on that," smiled Laura. When Monday came, she decided to wear jeans, seeing that a skirt might be the wrong sort of thing to wear when driving a go-kart. But being the girl she had become, she put on some make-up. "If you didn't read the advert properly, there was a fee for insurance and equipment costs. Don't worry, Alex has given me the money," said Laura. "Just got to wait for Kelly to appear." Kelly didn't know the plans for the day and as soon as she came in, she was wondering why Laura and Paula were ready to go out. "Going shopping again?" she asked. They headed out and caught the bus into town. The needed another bus to reach their destination. Upon arriving at the old bus station, they searched for the way in. Upon getting in, they found a sight that certainly pleased the eyes of Paula: the sight of tinkering with engines. They were the first to arrive, it seemed. Only a number of adults were there, testing out the karts. "Just a moment," said the one man, who had noticed them arrive. He was tinkering with the engine on one of the karts. "Come for the karting, I presume? Both of you?" he asked. "Just me," said Paula. "Kelly is just here for support." "Alright, well we are just making sure they work first. If you just like to sit over there for a moment," he replied, pointing to some chairs. Paula wasn't one to sit down though. She was looking at the circuit that had been set up in the huge open building that had once been a bus garage. As she did, a few more potential drivers turned up. All were boys, and they too had come with parents. They were likewise told to wait, but some, like Paula, decided to look about. "Didn't expect to see any girls turn up," said the one boy. "You're not seriously considering this?" Paula turned and gave the boy a dirty look. "Yes I am! Got a problem?!" The boy just sniggered and walked off to talk to his friend or brother, whichever it may be. Any sign of the go-karting commencing didn't seem likely to appear soon. A few more faces did show up, and much to Paula's delight, one was a girl. But before she could say hello to this girl, she was called over by Laura. "Just doing the papers," said Laura. One of the men was now going around with a clipboard and pen and taking down the details of those who wanted to join. Paula filled in the form and signed it. As she was under 18, Laura signed it too. By now, a crowd had formed and the leader of the club had called over all new members to another part of the hall to give them a run down of the rules and principles of karting. Before we get you behind the wheel, I just need to give you the low down on rules and safety." As he started the lecture, everyone paid attention for the most part. Paula and Sharon noticed that some of the boys were not so attentive. They were also in their late teens, and Paula noticed that the boy who had questioned her ability earlier was among them. "Still, I'd prefer it if his sort weren't about," said Paula. Of the group, some were from the bottom end of the age limit. It appeared too, that they would be divided up by age. It didn't matter too much as there were only 5 karts available. The younger group would be the first to have a go. As they were taken over to be fitted with helmets and given simple instructions on how to drive, Paula decided to talk with Sharon more. "So, you're starting college in September?" asked Sharon. "We've got another year to go." "So, being twins, I take it you're inseparable?" asked Paula. "Very much so, that was until we started secondary school. In primary school, we were in the same class all the way through. At secondary school, we've never had a class together," replied Sharon. "I'm just hoping I can whip her in a real car. Of those that did, no one was hurt. Paula, Sharon and Steven had to continue waiting for their turn, so they went to speak to their parents. "Who were those you were speaking to?" asked Kelly. Said the same about myself, though I didn't mention that we're an item," said Paula. "Might be well if it stayed that way," said Kelly. "Some of those boys look like they just want to cause trouble." The way things turned out, Paula, Sharon and Steven were among the last group to have a go. They were glad that the suspected troublemakers had all had their turns. Despite being told not to race just yet, they were competing from the off and showing off in any way they could. The club organisers gave them a few harsh words when their turn ended. Finally, the two girls got their chance and they were given helmets and shown their karts. Each were shown the basics and given tips on how to corner. Above all, they were told that this was about mastering the kart and mastering the circuit. After being belted up, the men started the engines and they were off. Some of the troublemakers had stayed around to see if the girls lived up to their "reputations". In all though, they were disappointed. Though both Sharon and Paula did have crashes, they were simply down to misjudgements. With their 10 lap limit, both girls managed 8 clean laps. Steve almost equalled their score but scraped a barrier on the final lap. Sharon and Paula removed their helmets and went to congratulate each other. "There's proof that us girls can drive," said Sharon. "You said it," said Paula. Steve came over to congratulate Paula and his sister too. They then were joined by their parents and Kelly. "Well done Paula," said Laura. "Your dream of being a rallycar driver is very realistic going by that performance." "Yes Paula," said Kelly, giving her a hug. But their celebrations were cut short when the Mick called them all over for a final word. "Well, that was just a taster for now. Now you've got the general idea. Now while the summer holidays are on, we'll be having meetings every Monday and Thursday. Once the holidays are over, we'll switch to Sundays only," he said. "Any questions?" "When do we get to have races?" asked one boy. "When I say you're ready," replied Mick. "The only thing you'll be racing against is your personal best lap time for now. We'll be timing you next time." Mick left it for there and told them they could go home for today. "I can't attend two of the meetings, as I'll be away," said Paula. "Ok, lets get you home and get you something to eat," said Laura. * * * It was early afternoon when they arrived back home and the smell of cheese on toast soon reminded the girls of how hungry they were. "But some of those boys are making me feel I made a good move by becoming a girl." "Well, we did mention that you'll be treated differently, but not all boys are sexist pigs," replied Kelly. "Of course not," said Laura. "Your friend Kevin isn't for a start." "I might at one stage have avoided a battle of the sexes, due to my past," said Paula. "But I'm for us girls now." "I'll come and join you," said Kelly, finishing her last piece of toast. Laura just shook her head and collected the empty plates. Paula was just picking a skirt from her chest of drawers when Kelly came in, looking as though the cheese on toast hadn't quite quenched her hunger. Kelly was in a less than cheerful mood though as her expected period had finally arrived. Even so, Laura was just glad to have the extra hands available to carry the shopping home. "Mom, I'm nearly out of shampoo," said Paula as they went along the various aisles picking up the various necessities such as milk, bread, sugar and breakfast cereals. "Ok, usual brand I presume?" replied Laura. Paula had been using a combined shampoo and conditioner that was suitable for frequent use. Ever since becoming a girl, she had certainly been washing her hair a lot. As for Kelly, this shopping trip didn't mean much, even if she did spend a lot of time with Paula and her family. Laura had decided to make spaghetti carbonara that afternoon and had picked up the ingrediants including some mature cheddar and some ham from the deli counter. "Pleasure to be of service," smiled Kelly as she went to join her. Kelly was slightly disappointed though as Paula moved away from the CDs. She had started looking at the video games instead. "Oh of course, get one that you like," said Kelly. "This is more my taste." She showed Paula a dance game which required motion controllers. "What are supposed to do with that one?" asked Paula. "With the motion controllers, follow the dance moves on screen. It also has a karaoke feature," said Paula. "And the motion controllers are extra?" added Paula. "Looks like it," said Kelly. "But it would go down a storm in a party." "But I would prefer this," said Paula, still holding her rally game. "How much are the consoles anyway?" asked Kelly. "Try another shop. They've only got the games here," said Paula. "Will do," said Kelly. "But if you buy a games console, you'll have to have several games just to make it worth while." "I'll try and poke my dad into buying me one. I think I did the once, after getting my telly." "Do that then, and then we can do some dance moves," said Kelly. "I'd prefer hairpin turns in the Swiss Alps," said Paula. "Whatever," said Kelly. Ever since the Wii had been introduced, the other console manufacturers had responded with their own motion sensitive controllers. They were still looking at the various games and DVDs when Laura came over with her trolley. "There you are. I'm nearly finished and I need your hands to carry some of this," she said, pointing to the contents of the trolley. "Ok, we're coming," said Paula. "Any chance of getting us a games console in time for my birthday?" "The answer is no," said Laura. "Firstly, we are saving some money for our holiday and secondly, we have already decided what to get you for your birthday." "Never mind my love," said Kelly. "I'll try and get my parents to get one. You can come over and play on it anytime." Laura took the items through the checkout and soon all three were carrying bags of shopping to the bus stop. After a fairly lengthy wait for a bus, they were soon heading back inside the house. Once inside, Laura set about doing sandwiches for lunch. "You're not going to spend more time upstairs are you?" she asked the girls as they made for Paula's room. "I've got to check my pad," said Kelly. "So, any chance of that is a no." They remained upstairs all afternoon, only coming downstairs when Miriam came to collect Kelly. "I'll ask my parents about a games console," said Kelly as they came down the stairs. After a goodbye kiss, Kelly left with Miriam. Later that day, Paula tried Alex on the subject of games consoles. Her response was almost exactly the same as Laura's. "You want some spending money for the holiday don't you?" he asked. "Yes. And I know you've got a birthday present lined up for me," she sighed. "Yes. We can get you one for Christmas if you like," said Alex. "Ok," she replied, though not happy. Christmas was still many weeks away. She was soon called into the kitchen to help with the dinner. For the rest of the day, she wondered what she was going to do the week that Kelly was away. She knew Alicia would be willing to spend some time with her, but what about Linda? She switched on her phone and called Linda. "Hi Linda, it's me Paula. Just wondering what you're doing next week?" "Isn't Kelly keeping you busy enough?" asked Linda. That was sorted for the most part. Now, she just looked forward to Thursday and another day at the go-kart club. Wednesday was not much of a day. Kelly did of course come round as usual, but as she was still suffering from her period, it was much a case of relaxing more than anything else. They were still spending their time seated on Paula's bed, though for now, they were sitting at opposite ends, with their bare feet almost in each others faces. They were applying coats of varnish to each others toes. "I asked my parents about getting me a games console and they told me to wait till Christmas too," said Kelly. "Said it was too late for my birthday and that they were saving for next week." "We'll just have to wait till then," sighed Paula. "I'm looking forward to going to the Isle of Wight," said Kelly. "They weren't crashes, they were bumps. Besides, I only had two," said Paula. "Whatever, I want to see you and that Sharon show that small group of morons that us girls can at least match them," replied Kelly. "I have to admit, Sharon is pretty good," said Paula. "No fears, she's straight. She apparently gives her twin bro a thrashing at motor racing games." "Thank goodness she is straight. She sounds like another version of you," said Kelly. "I don't think there is any other girl exactly like me," smiled Paula. "You know what I mean," said Kelly. "I know," said Paula. * * * Thursday came and Paula was eager to get to the old bus garage. But as ever, Laura wanted to wait for Kelly first. Thankfully, she did arrive early and they were soon on their way. As with Monday, they were among the first to arrive. Paula decided to see if she could take a peek in the workshop where the go-karts were worked on. "I'm just interested in seeing what goes on," she told one of the mechanics. "They're lawn mower engines right?" "Mostly," said the mechanic. "Though modified to allow them to fit to these frames. We can show you how they work if you like?" "Alright, though I have an idea already," said Paula. As Paula stood and took notes from the mechanic, Laura and Kelly just watched as the other members slowly turned up. Among them were Sharon and Steven, who came over to say hello to Kelly. It was clear that Steve had not been told of Kelly's true friendship with Paula. "Hi Kelly," said Sharon. "We're planning on doing that," said Mick. "Though we haven't got a prize just yet." With no more questions coming his way, Mick decided to get the session underway. "Ok, groups of 5 again and no racing. We'll be starting you off one by one." The groups were as last time with 10 laps apiece for them. Mick was at the start/finish with a clipboard and stopwatches. "We'll be last again," said Sharon. "Yes, but at least we'll know what sort of times we're up against," said Paula. "Any tips?" asked Steve. "Cornering is key," said Paula. "Going fast on the straights is one thing but you lose speed and time on the corners." "Common sense," said Sharon. "Shame there are no handbrakes on these karts." "Handbrake turns would help," said Paula. "But we've just got a brake pedal and accelerator pedal." They stood and watched the others do their time trials. Again, there were those who found crashing just a little too easy and needed help from those standing at various points around the circuit. But from what Sharon could make of things, she was figuring that most were taking around 5 minutes to get round. The group of idiot boys were the ones to watch, seeing that speed was one thing that certainly interested them. Like last time, they were heavy on the accelerator from the off. Paula was secretly hoping that this need for speed would cost them on the corners, but they were using the brake pedal. Even so, some did crash due to entering a corner too quickly. When the last of them finished and got up from the kart, Mike seemed pleased with his time. "He must have got a good time," said Paula. "Though he did drive well." "Ok. So, we've just got to do well," said Steve. "Just concentrate on your own time," said Paula. Soon, it was their turn. Sharon was tying her hair back in a ponytail as went over to her kart. Paula and Steve were already putting on their helmets along with the other two boys who were with them. "Good luck," said Paula to Sharon and Steve. They nodded in agreement. Paula found herself at the front, with Steve next and then one of the other boys. Next was Sharon with the last boy at the rear. The first lap was in Paula's opinion, the one to judge the corners by. She tried not to brake too hard going into the corners and tried to take them sharp if possible. The first lap was over and it was a clean one. "Well done Paula!" came Kelly's cry, though Paula didn't hear it. Paula's mind was set on completing each circuit and hopefully faster each time. The second lap was clean as was the third, then fourth. She knew the corners now and how best to take them. Before she knew it, she was being given the chequered flag to stop. She had completed her 10 laps and all had been clean. "Girls rule!" shouted Kelly as Paula climbed from the seat and removed her helmet. "Well done Paula," said Mick. "Very good indeed." "How did I do?" she asked. "4:51" said Mick. "Not first but you're amongst the leaders." Paula smiled broadly. She waited as the others finished their laps. Soon, Steve and Sharon were standing by her. "You were quick," said Steve, upon hearing Paula's PB. "How about you?" asked Paula. "5:05" he replied. "5:09" said Sharon. Steve looked at his sister and smiled. "I've beat you! I've finally beat you!" "For now bro. Always next time," said Sharon. "Well done Paula. You're a natural." "Thanks," said Paula, who was now finding Laura and Kelly approaching her to congratulate her. "Well done sweetheart," said Laura. "Looks like you did very well indeed. "I hope so," said Paula. "Just hope they show the best times." They didn't show them but Mick was busy sorting the times out. He called the members around as he read the times in reverse order. Some were close with only a second or two between them. But Paula looked at some of the troublemakers as her name was read out - in second place. "I don't believe this! Beaten by a girl!" said one of them. "You were bloody lucky!" said another. "She wasn't lucky," said Mick. "She drove around that circuit like a pro. She deserves some respect." Paula discovered that the leader had only beaten her time by 3 seconds. Even so, she was thrilled that she had done so well on her first time trial. Though that small group of boys didn't heed Mick's advice and show her some respect, some of the other boys did. "Ok, so now you know your best times. Now I hope you'll try and better them," said Mick. "For practice makes perfect." As they all left to go home, Mick called Paula to one side. "Well done. You did really well and I meant what I said," he told her. "Do you wish for a career in this field?" "I hope to become a rally driver one day," said Paula. "Well, you have the talent," said Mick. "You certainly have it." Paula was smiling more than ever. It took Kelly to bring her back down to Earth. "You're not a rally driver yet," she said. "I know that, but I could well be," said Paula. "I know, but you haven't done anything yet," said Kelly. "Don't let this success go to your head." "She's right," said Laura. "You've still got some things to learn. If you end up in a real race, you'll have other things to worry about." Paula thought about it and realised that she may mean those boys who had a problem with girls. Back home, Paula was still feeling good about her personal best time. Laura and Kelly decided to let her have her moment, knowing that Alex would especially be interested. Alex arrived home to find Paula keen to tell him of her latest exploits in the world of go-karting. He was, as everyone guessed, very interested indeed. He wasn't surprised to hear that she was good at it but still chose to tell her not to let her concentration slip. "It obviously seems that you're destined for this career path, but there is still plenty of work for you to do. I can see what your instructor is pointing at, that you could become a champion go-kart driver. But don't get carried away," he told her. "You're right dad. Just focus on the now and not the future," she replied. "But it would be great to win a championship at this." "It would indeed," he said.
