They soon arrived at the jewellery shop where Alicia would get her ears pierced. The fact that Laura was determined to make amends for the birthday party problem seemed to help cheer up Kelly and Paula a bit, but there was no doubt that they wanted to be together on that day. "Cheer up," said Laura to Paula. "Your birthday is the week after we come back. No problems with that date." "I hope not," said Paula. "But by the time we get back, Kelly's birthday will be almost a week gone." Kelly's birthday fell on a Monday. The Smiths wouldn't be back till the Saturday after. Paula's birthday came 5 days later. By the time Kelly came back down, her hair didn't look much different. "It was just a trim," said Kelly to Paula. "Your mom's here," said Alex, opening the front door. "Hi mom. " said Kelly. "Just had my hair trimmed." "Nice job," said Miriam checking it. "Shall we go then?" "Kelly, don't forget to bring my clothes back," said Paula. "I won't. I'll bring them tomorrow," said Kelly. And with that, she said goodbye.
