This is part two of five. Bobbie and Nicole: The job starts.
On The Road.
Bobbie and Nicole were off. Bobbie was doing the driving. Bobbie turned
on the radio and left on the station that was there. Bobbie said,
"Nicole. I see what you mean about Larry. He was holding Helga and his
Godzilla doll in a white knuckled grip."
Nicole said, "Today was worse than ever. Last night I heard him crying
in his sleep. The past is coming back and is scaring him. He is having

Bobbie said, "You don't have to put Larry in a hospital. The Wellman
Clinic does outpatient work. Larry can go to the clinic or the clinic
can come to him. Now get some rest. Oswego is a long way from here and
you will be driving later."
Just over the New York Boarder, Bobbie pulled into a rest stop. "Wake
up Nicole. Lunch time. Let's see what Uncle Bill packed." said Bobbie.
Nicole blinked her eyes a few times then said, "I was asleep that long.
You should have woke me sooner."
Bobbie said, "No way Jose. You needed the sleep. Bathrooms are over
there." Nicole went and did what she needed to do.
When she returned, she asked, "What's for lunch?"
Bobbie said, "Sandwiches, potato chips, hardboiled eggs, fresh fruit,
fruit juice, and some cookies. He even added napkins, condiments, wet
wipes, and a trash bag. He thought of everything."
Nicole said, "No he didn't."
Bobbie said, "What did he forget?"
"The kitchen sink." responded Nicole.
Bobbie said, "I have been influencing your humor a little too much."
After lunch and cleanup they started the trip again. Nicole tuned in a
Jazz station from Syracuse and Bobbie fell asleep. The miles rolled
away fast and easy. Slightly north of Syracuse, Nicole was pulled over
by the New York State Police. She showed her badge and license at the
same time. Nicole asked, "How can I help you Trooper?"
Trooper Lewis B. Puller said, "You were weaving and speeding. There is
a diner up a head that has good coffee and great pies. Sample some of
each please."
Bobbie was a light sleeper and woke up and said, "What's up Chesty?
Long time no see."
Lewis said, "Bobbie. I haven't seen you since Dr. Cohiba and Coach
Churchill were wed. How have you been?"
Bobbie said, "I am a Sergeant on the Salem Sheriff's department. Nicole
is my partner. How about leading the way to the pie and coffee and I
will drive. Nicole you are buying. Professional Courtesy works both
ways."
Nicole said, "You right Bobbie, but you didn't give me a chance to
thank your old college buddy."
Lewis said, "She got you on that score Bobbie. Sometimes I think you
earned the nickname of Chesty more than me."
Bobbie said, "We are both hard chargers."
At the diner Lewis and Bobbie caught up on old times and each other.
Lewis found Bobbie was married and the mother of twins. Bobbie found
Lewis was divorced. His ex-wife could not stand the pressure of being a
cop's wife. He never had any children. He thought he was lucky on that
count for children in a divorce often blame themselves for their
parent's problems.
After the break and the remember when session, Bobbie drove the rest of
the way to Scott's house in Oswego. Scott greeted them warmly. He said,
"There is a bathroom over there. There is one upstairs with a shower
and tub. Refresh your tired minds and bodies and I will get your
luggage and place them in your rooms."
Nicole asked, "Why show us the bathrooms first?"
Scott said, "Something my mom taught me. If you have guests, show them
the bathroom. Your lady friends most importantly. If they did a long
trip, they will need to refresh or relieve themselves. Sometimes both.
My mom taught me to be a gentleman. She not only could quote Emily
Post, but tell you the chapter, verse, and page number as well. Yes,
all moms can quote Emily Post."
Bobbie and Nicole looked at each other and laughed. Bobbie said,
"Inside joke between us girls. Please don't ask."
Scott said, "All right lass, after you finish refreshing I will give
you the nickel tour. Supper will be served in three hours."
"What is for supper anyhow?" asked Nicole.
Scott said, "Steak on the grill with corn on the cob. Steamed Clams and
Salt Potatoes. Salad and for desert a choice of chilled watermelon or
frozen yogurt."
Nicole asked, "What are Salt Potatoes?"
Scott said, "A regional treat. Salt Potatoes are potatoes that range in
size from a golf ball to a small apple. They are boiled in salt water
and served with melted butter both over them and on side to dip in.
They came from the salt works in Syracuse. The workers were mostly of
Scottish and Irish decent. They would take potatoes to work for lunch.
They would boil them in the salt brine and eat them. Today they are
served at Picnics, Field Days, Bar B Ques, Clam Bakes, and at any other
event. They can be reheated in a microwave or cut up and used as
hashbrowns. They are never a leftover problem. I use only half the salt
in the bag they give you. The rest is good for cooking or Margaritas.
(Salt Potatoes come with five pounds of potatoes and one pound of
crystal salt.) Syracuse picked up its nickname as the Salt City from
the salt works there. Their University Mascot was called the Saltine
Warrior until was deemed improper. The clams I can do one of two ways.
First drop them in boiling water until they open. The other is to place
in a nonstick skillet two sticks of butter. I break the sticks up to
speed up the process. Between ten and twelve ounces of white wine is
added. Then Garlic powder, chives, and cliantro. All that is brought to
a boil. Then I add the clams. Steam until they open. The broth can be
served as a dipping sauce."
Nicole said, "My brother did asparagus that way recently. He said he
got the recipe off the internet."
Scott asked, "What is his e-mail address?"
Nicole said, "[email protected]."
Scott said, "I gave it to him. It works well with brussel sprouts and
broccoli also."
After that Scott gave both Bobbie and Nicole a tour. Bobbie was
impressed at the boat garage that Scott had built. From the house you
had to open a very tight sealing door. The boat would be docked on the
side. There was a cradle under the boat during the winter or when a
major repair was needed. Scott could seal the channel and pump out the
water. A dry dock when needed. Scott kept the channel dry when not in
use to keep out Zebra Muscles. Outside there was a dock that had a
fishing trawler and an old P.T. Boat tied up. Scott used both for
fishing. Nicole loved how Scott turned the old barn into an aircraft
hanger. It had two aircraft there. One was an old World War II fighter.
The other was a big, long-range helicopter.
Nicole asked, "Can you really fly them?"
Scott said, "Yes I can. I take you up if you like."
Nicole said, "Maybe later. How about Saturday?"
Scott said, "That is not a problem. However we must land before
sunset."
Nicole said, "What is up with Saturday night?"
Scott said, "A local function. The city of Oswego is having it is
annual celebration. The City call's it Harbor Fest. The locals call it
Harbor Mess. Saturday is the firework display. A very good show set to
music. We should see it from the ground or the lake."
Nicole said, "That sounds great. Which boat will you use?"
Scott said, "The P. T. boat. It has a better viewing deck. There will
be a cooler full of beer and some lemonade."
Bobbie asked, "Why the lemonade?"
Scott said, "I won't drive a car or a boat drunk."
Nicole said, "Is there anything else you will have?"
Scott said, "Wings, pizza, deli sandwiches, and chips and dip."
Nicole asked, "Can I drive it?"
Scott said, "I will teach you tomorrow. Have both Bobbie and you bring
your swimsuits. I want to drive the Coasties nuts."
Nicole said, "Why thank you. Bobbie is spoken for sir."
Bobbie said, "He knows Nicole. He pipped at my wedding. He never
charged Belle or Bill a dime, and would not take the tip."
Nicole asked, "Why not?"
Scott said, "A tribute to Capt. Starr, and a gift to the bride."
Nicole said, "What is our cover Bobbie?"
Bobbie said, "I did not think of one yet. I am stumped."
Scott said, "That is why Capt. Starr left that task to me. Since Bobbie
is using one of my autos, she is a former coworker of mine and a
tenant. She managed some of the rental properties that I have. Nicole
you are my niece. You met Bobbie through me at work. You two bonded as
friends and became lovers."
Bobbie said, "Pucker up Nicole and give me a kiss." Bobbie was slipping
into her role and teaseling Nicole.
Nicole said, "Yuck! I rather kiss Scott." (Nicole was Bi-Sexual and was
afraid to admit the fact.}
Scott said, "That can be done lass. Come sit on my lap and face me."
Nicole did so wondering on what Scott was up to. Scott went on,

Scott chuckled and said, "Easy, however you now must do that with
Bobbie. You will find it a great way to pass info back and forth right
out in the open. Remember, it is in the line of duty and not anything
else."
Bobbie said, "Come here Nicole and straddle my lap and wrap your arms

Bobbie's command as Bobbie continued "I rather be with Barry. However

Scott is right, this is a good way to pass info. It could look like

watched at any time. I would like to say not now, but Capt. Starr did
say one of the Wellman Workers are involved. So if outside, stay in
role. If inside and alone, relax and talk with care. I am not known at
the Wellman except for Capt. Starr and the Gunney."
Nicole asked, "Who is the Gunny?"
Bobbie said, "Uncle Bill. He was a Gunnery Sergeant. He was Aunt
Belle's Platoon Sergeant. Scott was a squad leader. Scott did a lot of
the stuff he won't talk about or even admit that stuff was there. If he
had to, he would deny that fact his last name is Scott. He is alone to
protect any mate he might have. He will not endanger anyone. In case
you failed to spot it, he is armed with a large and powerful handgun.
He has aged since the last time I saw him. He has been doing stuff for
the government again. His fishing charter operation is a cover. He can
do a lot of long-range work off any of his boats. I bet both of the
aircraft in that barn can be armed as well as his boats."
Nicole went, "How do you know?"
Bobbie said, "That was his job in the Marines. He was a Snake. I think
he still does some Snake work for the government."
Nicole asked, "What is a Snake?"
Bobbie said, "You have heard of Delta Force, SEALS, and the Green
Berets? Snakes are all that and more. They are so hush hush. You know
that dumb line you hear in the movies, 'If I tell you, I will have to
kill you?' Snakes are told to kill you for asking, then tell you."
Nicole said, "That is crazy. No one is that way. You make sound like he
is a sociopath who works to protect the society that would put him away
for what he is."
Scott said, "She is right Nicole. Now forget everything you heard. It
sounds like a cheap SciFi movie plot. My biggest mistake was learning
to care again. I am not that way anymore and do not want to return. You
must work on your cover. On Monday you go for pre registration and
Orientation at Wells College. I will drive you, as a good 'uncle'
should. Bobbie will talk with Sheriff Sterling.
