(Elaine) The late arriving?
(*Wendy-J) Elaine, have you prepared an opening statement?
(Elaine) Not really, I am happy to be here, better late than never!
(*Wendy-J) Well we're happy you made it and that nothing untoward has happened
to keep you from us. Let the festivities begin!
(PJ) Elaine, what motivates you to write? What do you get out of it?
(Elaine) Good question.
(PJ) (I knew if I asked enough, I'd come up with a good one eventually!)
(Elaine) I like to write stuff that no one else has! I like realistic stories,
so my stories are based on what might happen rather than the magical! Though
motivation is something I am short on at the moment.
(Mindy) You have written several stories in the Victorian times, is there
something about that time that you like?
(Elaine) I liked Rhonda Wagram's story and like the era. The women were very
feminine in those days and that appeals to many TGs, it appeals to me.
(PJ) You mention being attracted to realism. I must say, you do a fine job of
realizing your desire to be realistic. But given that, all of our writing
contains a large element of wish-fulfillment, where do you draw the line? How do
you determine if something's realistic or not?
(Elaine) I think you make a tough questioner!
(PJ) *Glancing over shoulder* (Me? You wouldn't be so impressed if you knew I do
all my rough drafts in crayon!)
(Elaine) I like to be as realistic as possible and that means lots of reading
and research, it is not easy to get the detail right!
(Mindy) How much research did you do before writing the Juliette stories?
(Elaine) I read the "Importance of Being Earnest" and some of Wilde's other
work. I researched on the costumes of that era and I was going to post some
pictures for Juliette, but I never got round to it sadly.
(Janice) In your bio you say you're TG yourself. You're one of the few authors
who have said that. Are your stories an outlet for that? Or are you just writing
"what you know"?
(Elaine) They are my outlet, if you read "Elaine and Me", you will see I am the
hero and the heroine. I write from desire to be something I am not.
(PJ) Where did you find good research material on Victorian Era costume? (I beat
my head against a wall for hours trying to find stuff for "Command
Performance".)
(Elaine) There are a few good websites I used and I had a good helper in Kim,
who pointed me in the right direction!
(PJ) (Oh man, I'd love to hear about them!)
(Elaine) You can e-mail me and I will tell you!
(Debbie) How do you develop a plot line?
(Elaine) It just happens, corny as that may seem. The basic outline and story
idea is always there, but how the story develops is something that just happens.
You can dig yourself into some holes that way! I did that with "Wanted".
(Janice) Whups, sorry! I have to leave. Thanks Elaine! And I'll look forward for

(Mindy) Your characters struggle with details of their new fem life, while many
other stories do not. Is that on purpose?
(Elaine) Yes, it is deliberate. A woman is more than just putting on a dress!
She has to cook, sew, shop for food and thousands of other little things.
(Mindy) How should that be included into a story?
(Elaine) It is all about imagination. That story of ours was a classic example,
imagine how you would react if you suddenly became female! That was why I
enjoyed writing it!
(*Wendy-J) Elaine, what was your motivation on "How I Worked My Way into
Dresses"? I know you did not start the story!
(Elaine) I did it for Mindy, as some pay back for being the host of
Fictionmania. Mindy's story outline was there, so I just tarted it up! It was
quite enjoyable to see it posted on that basis!
(PJ) Do you start with characters and put them in a story, or does the story
suggest the characters?
(Elaine) No, I start with the idea of the story and the characters develop as I
write. The characters are in my head, but defining them is part of the writing
process.
(PJ) (Interesting. Because your characters are so well developed!)
(*Wendy-J) Do you have any story you would like to take back and re-do?
(Elaine) The story I would take back is "Wanted".
By the way, it is cold and wet in bonnie Scotland this evening!
(PJ) (When is it other than cold and wet?) *Memories of Holy Loch*
(Elaine) PJ, it can be nice, but not often.
(PJ) (Yeah, and it's always raining in Seattle! (Shut up, PJ!))
(Elaine) Someone told me that.
(*Wendy-J) Are you saying that you just allow characters to develop?
(Elaine) Yes, they are allowed to be whatever I want to make them within bounds,
realistic bounds.
(Mindy) If you had the chance to write a magical story, would you give it a go?
(Elaine) No.
(Mindy) Why not, you seem so against that story concept?
(Elaine) I am not against it as such, it just doesn't light my fire. I would
rather write a TG love story.
(PJ) I share your thoughts about magic. Why does it not interest you as much as
other areas? Does it have to do with "realism" again?
(Elaine) Yes, it does. The transformation process is painful! I am a scientist
and I don't believe in magic potions and such.
(Darkside) I like a good love story, being an incurable romantic and all.
(Elaine) I like the idea of a TS falling in love, they are people like all of
us. So I think the concept of a TS being forced into a relationship is somewhat
overdone, being TS is hard enough.
(Darkside) Agreed, the issues facing TS's aren't written about much, as far as I
know.
(Elaine) I have been toying with the idea of a realistic story of a TS before,
during and after transition, and the problems she faces. That to my knowledge
has never been done.
(Darkside) Sounds a great idea Elaine!

(Elaine) You need to tell me more about that PJ!
(PJ) (Oh, sorry. Talking out of turn about someone else's work. I'll shut up
now.)
(Mindy) What authors other than Rhonda inspire you?
(Elaine) PJ Wright, Joel Lawrence and there is a story called "Patricia" which I
read on the Nifty Archive. It was long, but well written!
*Takes a sip of water* Got to watch my figure!
I would just like to say that, without Mindy's encouragement, in the early days
I would never have written half of what I did.
(*Wendy-J) Considering that you are so inspired by Joel Lawrence, have you
looked outside of Fictionmania and Nifty to check out Ellen Hayes or Tigger? How
do they compare?
(Elaine) Yes, I liked "Tuck" by Ellen Hayes, it is well done and very realistic!
I just wish she would write some more!
(*Wendy-J) A common complaint!
(Elaine) Tigger, is a good author too. I have read a lot of his stuff, but the
Joel Lawrence original is hard to beat! "Miss High Heels" appealed to me!
(Mindy) What advice could you give me to starting writers?
(Elaine) Writing needs space to improve the clarity, but long paragraphs are
out.
You need lots of dialogue to describe what is happening. I find that many
stories are not worth reading because they do not give space for each character
to speak. Remember that a new character talking makes a new paragraph always!
(*Wendy-J) What is harder to write character dialogues or scene descriptions?
(Elaine) Scene descriptions are harder because it takes up so much effort, for
so little of the story. It is useful to take your time and use dialogue to
describe the scene too! Dialogue is easy, I imagine myself in both roles!
(Jill) How do you define realistic? What makes a story real?
(Elaine) That it could conceivably happen or it might have happened in the past.
Magic is just magic! LOL
(*Wendy-J) We are going to open the chat up to the floor here. Remember, this is
Elaine's day in the in the spotlight.
(Mindy) Do you picture Juliette being more than two stories in it's current
form? Do you have an ending planned out yet?
(Elaine) No, Juliette could run and run. While I would love to finish it, I just
have so many other things to do. I could picture other boys going to the same
school and a new plot developing.
(*Wendy-J) Oh no! Another writer with diarrhea of the keys! LOL
(Elaine) Yes, I suppose.
(Darkside) Elaine, you said you were in Scotland. I was in the UK last week and
heard a lot about devolution. Any thoughts on that? (A bit political, but hey
I'm curious.)
(Elaine) I am not for it! We have four tiers of government now: Local, Scottish,
British or UK and European, that is a lot of talking and tax pounds!
I am a Scot and proud of that, but I am also European. Billy Connolly once said
that anyone who wants to be a politician should barred from ever being one!
(*Wendy-J) ROTFLMAO
(PJ) "Politics - the last refuge of a scoundrel." Truer words...
(Elaine) LOL
(PJ) Ooo! Now there's a story idea. The polls say the voters want a woman for a
change... >:)

(Elaine) I must write a biker TG story!

(Darkside) Not a bad idea. You could do a spin on the Prince song. Not a red
Corvette, but a pink Harley!
(Mindy) Elaine getting back to TG, have you lived as a woman or dressed up? How
does the author get the details real?
(Elaine) I not sure of the relevance Mindy of the question. I can be TG and not
dress up, but I have gone through the phase of dressing as a woman.
(Mindy) I read a lot of stories *Grin* to get them ready for posting and some
the facts are way off!
(Elaine) I like to look at women, but they do not dress as women, even in my
stories. I like feminine women, but women do not seem to exploit their
femininity as they should. The world would be a better place perhaps if they
did.
(PJ) It's interesting to note that the good authors (like Elaine) have a
fashion-sense that shows in their stories. The, er..., "not so good" writers
seem to have a fascination for white blouses and leather miniskirts.
(Mindy) Do you think that today women dress less feminine and that writing TG,
as we think it should be written, will be more of a stretch?
(Elaine) Yes, women wear slacks and shorts, very few wear tight skirts and
dresses! I can't remember the last time I saw a pair of heels!
(PJ) (More's the pity! Oops, sorry that's non-PC!) *Blush*
(*Wendy-J) You obviously have not been in NYC!
(Elaine) I was in Disneyland Paris last week. I counted only a handful wearing
skirts and a few in dresses, the rest wore shorts!
It is all about being practical, despite the 80F temps last week they wore
slacks, shorts or trainers, that is sad.
(DebbieL) Hey, in Los Angeles, women wear white blouses and leather minis! Or
black minis with black tops!
(Mindy) Yes, even in downtown Reno women still wear heels and what the casino
workers wear... :)
(Darkside) LA and roller skates! I thought they were surgically grafted to their
feet!
(Elaine) LOL
(*Wendy-J) It's funny! Workers seem to wear heels, skirts and dresses, but only
the "girls", not women, wear dresses and skirts after work!
(DebbieL) It's very warm in LA, women workers are wearing skirts and nylons with
heels!
(Elaine) Even at work Wendy, at least here in cold and wet Scotland!
(*Wendy-J) Elaine, do you consider yourself a feminist?
(Elaine) Yes, I suppose I do.
(Mindy) Do you have a question you would like to ask your readers?
(Elaine) Why so few comments on stories or reviews?
I have one story that has only had one comment and it has been on the site since
August.
(DebbieL) I don't like writing reviews on Fictionmania, because so few of my own
works appear here.
(Mindy) Me, I used to write notes to just about every story submitted to
Fictionmania. Now I find it hard to find the time, a sad day for me.
(Elaine) Yes, you have a tough job as it is Mindy! I don't know where you get
the energy.
(Anne-Mal) I think that it is the problem of excess, Mindy!
(Mindy) I from time to time add reviews, but use all kinds of different names,
so nobody thinks I am playing favorites.
(Elaine) LOL
(Darkside) Aha, so Mindy's a ghost writer!
(*Wendy-J) Haven't you figured that out yet?
(Anne-Mal) What kinds of comments do you exactly want to get?
(Elaine) Some feedback on what they liked about the story or hated.
People get a wonderful service out of Fictionmania, I think they just download
stories to save and read later.
(Mindy) You want feedback, just say you are not going to write anymore and quit!
You will be flooded!
(Elaine) I will do that Mindy! *Smile*
(Jill) I'm afraid to write a review, because I like to pick out details and I'm
afraid of offending the author.
(DebbieL) Some feedback would be most welcome.
(*Wendy-J) Jill, as a budding writer, I can say that any nit-picking is welcome!
I'm sure all would agree.
(Elaine) If the e-mail is written well and the criticism is justified, then I
would take it.
(Jill) I've been told horror stories of sensitive writers, who don't come back
after a bad review.
(Elaine) How many fan e-mails do you think I get a week, one, if I am lucky! LOL
(*Wendy-J) A lot less than I do I'm sure Elaine!
(PJ) (I would have to say that if you can't take honest, constructive criticism,
you really shouldn't be posting stuff in public.)
(Elaine) Agreed PJ. I found that when I posted the "Aunt Roberta" story I got
some tremendous feedback, Rhonda Wagram took a deep interest in it and we became
good friends.
(Anne) But do "mainstream" writers get any more feedback?
(Darkside) Elaine, would you favor 'ratings' or grades for stories?
(*Wendy-J) All stories start out with 100 for perfection, with points deducted
for whatever.
(Jill) That's an idea Darkside, for those readers who are to lazy to write a
whole review. They could just click a 1-5 rating.
(Darkside) Followed up by some constructive remarks. I for one don't mind being
told my stuff is crap, as long as I know why.
(Elaine) Agreed Darkside, you just need some comments, some feedback, anything!
I do it myself though, I download a story to read later and I forget to post a
comment, by the time you read it, it is too much trouble to get back in touch
with the author and you feel awkward after such a long time!
(Darkside) All authors need feedback, it's how we learn (well I do anyway).
Yeah, but I'm terrible at feedback. Sorry writers.
(Elaine) If I rate a story and there is an e-mail address, then I will send a
note. So always include an e-mail address in the story. *Touch wood* I have
never had any spam as a result.
(Jill) I guess a rating would be more for the readers then the authors. Authors
want reviews?
(PJ) (Authors would crawl over broken glass to get to a good review! And by
good, I mean "constructive".)
(Mindy) Do you feel that you have to write in American English or do you even
think about it?
(Elaine) I always write in British English!
(Jill) Is there much difference between the two?
(Elaine) Not really, the spell checkers I use are British, so color is colour,
etc.
Editor's Note- To all British chatters, I try to keep British spellings for
British speakers, but my spell checker is in American and so am I.
(Mindy) The slang is different though.
(Elaine) The dialogue is, yes.
(Jill) Yeah, I watch British TV and the slang is the only thing I don't
understand!
(Elaine) It is just the way we speak, I suppose a stiff upper lip.
(Darkside) The differences between a Brit fanny and an American one can lead to
an amusing confusion!
(*Wendy-J) Oh? How so?
(Elaine) A fanny is something you wave to keep cool!
(Darkside) A Brit. fanny, is a 'pussy'.
(*Wendy-J) LOL
(Darkside) Hence the phrase 'fanny pouch' raises all kinds of bemused looks in
the UK and a 'fanny magnet' does the same in the US.
(Jill) And don't ask for a napkin at a restaurant!
(Elaine) There are differences and I have attached some of the terms in some
stories. Like, ale is a measure of the strength, based on the cost of a barrel
of beer.
(Darkside) It's all beer to me! [_]0

(Darkside) Only kidding! So this chat log is a little like 1984 where the real
events are edited and the one that's produced is the *real* one?

(*Wendy-J) Elaine, why do you write? A form of relaxation, practicing or this is
what you like to write?
(Elaine) I like to write! It is therapeutic, but it is very time consuming and I
find I don't have the time as I did.
(Anne-Mal) Is it because of the lack of feedback?
(Elaine) You could be right about the lack of feedback Anne.
(Darkside) Elaine, how long does it take you to write a story?
(Elaine) A long time! Some have taken months, some have taken weeks! The longer
the story, the harder it is.
(Darkside) Me, too! On average takes me 18 months to write one. Do you do a lot
of background reading?
(Elaine) Yes, I do, but that is not the reason why it takes so long, it is just
one of continuity. I like to write the story in full as I go. I can get the
first 20 pages in almost one sitting and then, well I never seem to get the same
rate of production.
(jimrob) Elaine, I enjoy your stories because there is so much interesting
background included. I always look for new stories or updates to your existing
stories.
(Elaine) Thanks for that, I have a few on the stocks, but I am not sure when I
will finish them.
(jimrob) Anything new coming soon?
(Elaine) I would like to think so!
(Anne-Mal) Could it be that you are writing novels, not just stories?
(Elaine) Yes, I like the idea that I'm writing a mainstream novel.
(*Wendy-J) Elaine, when you said the longer ones are harder, could you expound?
(Elaine) It is just that you have to be consistent throughout Wendy.
(*Wendy-J) Boy, don't I know what you mean there!
(Elaine) You can forget that someone is in the parlour, when she should be in
the kitchen.
(jimrob) Any new stories coming? Or any updates to what is already posted?
(Elaine) Yes jimrob, I could post some, but they are incomplete.
(Jill) What's the best story you've ever written?
(Elaine) "Aunt Roberta", but I think I like "Elaine and Me" the most.

(Mindy) "Eyes Wide Shut" in video caption form would make some great images for
a story! Watch a movie with the volume off sometimes and you can get some really
great ideas!

waiting to see what happens to Juliette next!
(Elaine) Sorry, Mindy I need to get on with that. I have several other stories
that have caught my attention. I have about 10 in various stages of completion.
(jimrob) Yeah, I'm also waiting to see what happens to poor Juliette.
(Elaine) Juliette is not poor, she has a wealthy father!
(*Wendy-J) Now you sound like PJ, Elaine!
(jimrob) Juliette is rather rich, but I wonder if there is another hopeless
predicament she will be encountering!
(Elaine) That time I left her and her chums walking into the girl's school was
something I take great delight over! They had to walk into the unknown.
(Mindy) Yes, at every turn you keep getting Juliette in deeper and deeper!
(Elaine) I am glad you liked the Juliette stories Mindy and yes, the fact is she
can never go back to being Julian, she will just continue being Juliette.
(Mindy) But does she really know that yet? Believe it 100%?
(Elaine) Have you had some feedback on her that I don't know about?
(Mindy) No, but I think there is a spark of her old self under there. That is
just the way I feel.
(Elaine) Yes, she will try to be Julian again, but my dear friend Leila will
stop that notion!

(Elaine) The stories I write are a release for me and many others, that is good
and I am glad. I started to write because I couldn't find what I wanted and
found I was quite good at it. So if someone likes my writing, that is a real
bonus!

(*Wendy-J) Other than feedback?
(Elaine) Story ideas are always welcome! Kim, who suggested Juliette, was an
inspiration. He was over the moon when I gave him a credit in the story! He
wants OBJ finished, but is happy with the first one.
(Anne-Mal) So do you want to see more Mindy drafts?
(Elaine) No, I think someone else can do the Mindy story lines! No offense hon!
(Mindy) No problem! I don't have time to even think beyond a few rough outlines
and a few pages of draft.
(Elaine) I hope to visit the states in the next few years, so will drop by and
see you Mindy.
(Mindy) I was to be in London this week, but that changed.
(Elaine) When you coming to Scotland? The good thing about going to London is
coming back to Scotland!
(*Wendy-J) LOL
(Mindy) I normally travel in short bursts. I was to be in London 3 days and be
right back home, but no Scotland in the plans, for right now.
(*Wendy-J) Do you have any closing comments Elaine?
(Elaine) I have no real closing comments other than thanks for the chance for
talking about something that is very important to me. That others feel the same
is very gratifying indeed.
(Mindy) Well I enjoyed the afternoon!
(Elaine) Well, it is dark here.
