(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Do you have any stories posted anywhere other
than Fictionmania, JRD?
(JRD) A few on the Nifty archive and a few on wherever they archive
Newsgroup posts, but other than that no.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Are your stories all under JRD?
(JRD) Yes, they are. I have yet to use any other pseudonym.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Are there any stories you have only posted to the
Newsgroups?
(JRD) With the exception of the first parts of Witch Chronicles, I'm
pretty sure I've sent all my stories that I posted to the Newsgroups to the
list.
(Bashful) Where do you get your story ideas from?
(JRD) I'm not sure I can point to any one thing that gives me an idea
for my stories. I'll see something on the TV or in a Newsgroup.
Sometimes things come to me as I drift off to sleep.
(Monica) (Drifting into or out of sleep gives me ideas too!)
(JRD) Some of my ideas come from reading other stories and getting
ideas about how they'd go if I had written them.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) You said that you have posted stories to FM,
Nifty and the Newsgroups. How has the response been from each?
(JRD) I'm not sure how much I get from each. Except in the case of
names I can identify as being others on the FM list, people rarely say
where they found my stories.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) I know that authors here talk about a lack of
response, so I was just wondering if you get anymore from other venues?
(JRD) Unless they mention something I haven't posted in a very long
time, I usually assume it's in response to the Newsgroup posts. I used to
get the most responses when I posted to alt.sex.stories.moderated but that
Newsgroup seems to be out of order right now.
(SteveZ) With the lengths that some of your stories go to, how do you
stick with them when other ideas pop up?
(JRD) That's probably one of the hardest things I have to deal with.
There are sometimes when I'm writing in one story and a half dozen
different ideas come along for other stories.
(SteveZ) My problem is getting the bug to work on something new before
the old ones are done.
(JRD) I just realize that if I actually give in to the urge to write
other stuff, I'll never get any stories actually completed!
(Lorna) How long have you been 'posting' your work? (I've noticed FM
only has "Trinary")
(JRD) Trinary was my first story, and I first posted that back around
September '97. I haven't posted others to FM because I usually get
distracted by my writing and forget to take the time to send my stories
in!
(Mindy) If you could pass on one word of advise to a beginning writer,
what would it be?
(JRD) Read as many stories as you can to get an idea of what you like.
Pick in terms of genre, sub-genre, and writing style, then write about
what you like to read.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Do you get many reviews?
(JRD) To be honest, I can't recall ever having seen any reviews of my
work, but I also feel that people put too much stock in reviewers.
Reviewers are people, only individuals. If you happen to agree with
reviewers opinions, that is fine, but too many people let reviewers tell
them what to think about a story before they've read it!
(LizBennett) What do you get out of being an author?
(JRD) Fulfillment of my creative urge. A way to express my ideas to
others and occasionally, a much needed catharsis for pent-up emotions
I need to deal with.
(LizBennett) Well, during an Author's Chat they come thick and fast!
(Mindy) Do people e-mail you and pass on story ideas that they want
YOU to write?
(JRD) In all the time I've been writing, I think I've had only a
couple ideas offered.
(Mindy) Did you write them and if not how did you handle them?
(JRD) One just totally didn't fit within the story continuum as I
envisioned it, so I just politely turned down the idea.
The other wasn't a really fleshed out idea, so I did a take of the
idea and worked with it a bit. That was the basis behind "Change of
Life".
(SteveZ) Do you ever get frustrated with e-mail correspondents who
don't reply to messages?
(JRD) Not really. Understand that most correspondence to me is just a
short compliment. Most writers aren't going to get involved in a long
correspondence. I also understand that other writers are busy and may
not have the time to respond to my messages.
(SteveZ) I've had some readers give me comments with ideas, but then
when I reply to them, I never hear from them again.
(JRD) The only problem I ever had with e-mail is when a person sent a
complaint to me because he had misread my story. When I tried to
respond, it turned out he hadn't included a valid return address. So, oh
well.
(A_Super_Hero) Your stories keep adding and adding characters. You
do not seem to let go of any of them. Is it because you like the
characters so much you just want to keep writing about them?
(JRD) I hadn't really noticed, but I guess I have to admit it is true. I
suppose the reason I don't drop characters from my stories is that too
many people have dropped out of my life, and I don't like the concept of
people just disappearing! Everybody has a life in my stories and I like to
write that fact in. Lives are complicated!
(Mindy) Do you have a story out there that you wish you could
withdraw or re-write?
(JRD) That I could withdraw? No. But sometimes when I'm writing, I
think of multiple ways a story could go and choose one of them.
Sometimes when I re-read that story later I wonder where the story line
would've gone if I had gone with one of my alternate ideas! I have a
bunch of those alternate ideas with "Change of Power" and some day I
might write an alternate universe version of the story.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Could you name some of the stories on
Fictionmania you enjoy reading?
(JRD) I like the modified Marvel/DC universes that has been written
about. I also like the "PJ Chronicles" stories that I've read.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) What motivated you post stories to the Newsgroups
in the first place, wasn't it a little intimidating?
(JRD) Not intimidating, more so a desire to see the stories I like
to read! For about a month or so before I started "Trinary" I was reading
the Newsgroups and all the stories I found seemed to be clich? FemDom
TG types. Man offends woman. Man gets kidnapped by woman. Man
is abusively transformed into a girl by woman. Woman gets off scot-
free. I find those stories ultimately distasteful.
So I wanted a story where the transformation resulted in a happy
ending rather than unlimited pain and abuse. So I wrote "Trinary".
Which ends in three people living happily ever after.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) So you wanted to encourage different types of
stories than normally appear?
(JRD) I'm not sure encourage is the right word. I definitely wanted
to see something different and I figured if no one else was going to write
the stories I wanted to see then I would.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) The stories you that you describe, the ones you
found on the Newsgroups, seem that while men transform into women,
the women act like men!
(JRD) Well definitely the women were polarized in their behaviors.
Either they were utter and total bitches determined to beat men into
submission or total panty-waist, ultra-feminine stereotypes of femininity.
(A_Super_Hero) You seem to focus on having everything obeying rules,
even in your magic series, do you do this to make everything seem more
real and important?
(JRD) I guess I do. I've always had a more technical bent than most. I
also had a period where I was fascinated by the paranormal and
supernatural. From what I read, even psychic and magic powers have
their own rules. So even if I didn't use those same rules, I wanted my
"powers" to have rules that they obeyed!
(Mindy) Have you ever written yourself into a story?
(JRD) Yeah, I have. All of my stories have a character with some part
of my personality, but in "Domme's Romance", the character of Rand is
almost a direct lift from my life.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) We are going to open it up for a free for all
now. Just remember that JRD is still in the spotlight!
(Mindy) Do you have a story in the hopper?
(JRD) Well, I'm working on "Avatar" right now. I have some ideas for
"Witch Chronicles", "Biochemistry" and the "Change of..." series, but
nothing fleshed out.
(Monica) I'm looking forward to them!
(Georgia) I have really enjoyed your sudden output of
intelligent well written stories!
(JRD) Thanks, Georgia.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Do comments play a part in the shaping of
future stories?
(JRD) Not really. Comments rarely contain ideas for me to work with.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Not ideas exactly, I meant when people are
critical.
(JRD) I guess I've been lucky that way. Not a lot of critical
response. Usually people only get critical when they've misinterpreted
what I've wrote.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Do you try to correct the misinterpretations in
the stories by rewriting or just explain them?
(JRD) Usually just explain them. But if it's a small
misinterpretation, not a gross mistake and I'm writing a sequel, I'll
include something in the sequel to clear it up.
(Mindy) Does anybody in your private life know you write TG fiction?
(JRD) A couple people do.
(Mindy) And the reaction?
(JRD) Mostly disinterest.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Probably just don't read in general.
(Monica) Not even "Do you want to be a woman"?
(JRD) No, most people I know read avidly. It's just not a big deal
for them what I write.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Oh, I guess disinterest is acceptance!
(JRD) I suppose so, but I don't have a lot of people in my life to begin
with.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Could I ask what level of education do you
have?
(JRD) HS graduate, Vocational training, and some college, but I avidly
read just about anything I can, non-fiction included.
(Mindy) How do you make sure that you write accurate descriptions of
women's reactions to certain events in your stories?
(JRD) Mindy, I base my women's reactions on how I see other women
reacting. I have five sisters. I grew up with three of them. Also, I am
an avid "woman watcher".
(Mindy) I once has someone say that they could not write a beauty shop
or a doctors exam scene because they had never seen one. Only what
they could see at work, the mall, etc. is what they had to use.
(JRD) I guess that's just my upbringing at work. With 4 less than 18
kids in the household, we all went to the local beauty college for
haircuts. So with me on one side of the shop, the women were on the other
side getting what they got done! Women take much longer, so I had to
sit and wait. I watched a lot.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) What is your opinion about Fictionmania and
Mindy?
(Monica) Anne-Mal! You ask that while Mindy is here? ;-)
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Mindy is a Goddess of the Internet, she sees
everything anyway!
(Monica) Well, I do agree on the "Goddess of the Internet" :-)
(Georgia) lol
(JRD) I think FM is probably one of the best sites on the net. I just wish
that more people interested in TG fiction knew about it!
(Georgia) Anyone interested in on-line TG fiction must make this site a
Mecca!
(Mindy) GEESH! I will have my chat night someday, let's get back to
JRD! Is there any way an author could research out this areas they
know nothing about?
(Monica) If I lack some experience I often ask others on IRC (chat).
(JRD) Read a lot. Usually the scenes in other stories are descriptive
enough to give them the idea for their stories, but there's such a thing as
being too descriptive. People who read usually have an imagination
strong enough that they don't need 4 paragraphs where 2 sentences will
do!
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) So the best way to start writing is to steal from
others. :)
(JRD) Kind of.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) When you got your first response to a story,
how did it make you feel?
(JRD) Great! I had been writing stuff for a while, but I was finally
getting feedback for doing it!
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Not to pick on any individual, but why does
every reader on Fictionmania seem so bashful!
(JRD) Don't be shy. I don't bite 8)
(Bashful) Maybe they're afraid they will be traced by the Internet
police :)
(Regal) Not bashful, just don't have any questions. Sometimes we just
like to read :)
(Carol__Collins) Many may be ashamed because they enjoy TG stories.
Sorry I came so late. How long have you been writing TG stories?
(JRD) My first story was published in Sep'97. But I've been interested
in TG fiction for a while.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) You know that's a good question, does the
'danger' add to the spice of reading the stories or even writing them?
(JRD) Not for me. In fact, my stories got longer because I got
comfortable with my TG interest and just wrote more.
(Bashful) Me too, when I finally admitted I was writing TG stories
to my S.O., I found a fan and a proof reader/editor. Of course, not
everyone will be so understanding but you never know.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Is the spice necessary?
(JRD) No. The "spice" is distracting to me.
(Georgia) JRD, have been commercially published?
(JRD) No, not yet. Just published on the net.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Do you have ending worked out in advance or
just hope to get to one?
(JRD) I usually have an idea for an ending envisioned then work
towards it.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) Ah, so when you talk about expanding the story
you mean the characterization!
(JRD) Both characterization and storyline. When I reach one ending, I
come up with another then write towards that.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) What types of stories won't you do?
(JRD) I won't do stories that end in misery.
(Cindimarie) How did you get into transformation stories?
(JRD) I got into transformation stories to fill what I perceived as a
void in the stories that were available.
(Cindimarie) Did you write before you did transformation stories?
(JRD) I have written for a while.
(Loki) If you could grant anyone's wish to be transformed other than
your own. Who would it be?
(JRD) I don't know enough about others wishes to grant any.
(Loki) IF someone was to offer you a transformation fully into the
body you desire but you would have to give up your old life and
connections with others. Would you take it?
(JRD) That's a toughie. I don't have all that many connections to
give up. Except for my infirmity I don't really have a problem with
the body I've got. I suppose I would if it meant curing my MS.
(Georgia) JRD) Is your MS under control?
(JRD) MS is a hard disease to manage. Barely controllable at the best
of times.
(Georgia) You have our hearts and thoughts of well being : )
(JRD) Thanks.
(Georgia) Do you mind me asking how old you are?
(JRD) 29. I'll be 30 in Sep.
(Georgia) You write with a very mature self assured style - keep up
the good work!

(Moderator_Anne-Mal) If you don't mind, could you explain to us what
MS is?
(JRD) MS is a disease which causes a breakdown of the sheath
surrounding the nerves in the spinal cord. It causes interference of the
passages of electricity from the brain to parts of the body.
(Cindimarie) I haven't written yet, but would like to try. How do I get
started?
(JRD) Cindi, read a lot then write what you like to read!
(Carol__Collins) Do you have plans to become published? I know that
Mags, Inc., is looking for new stories, but they mandate the plot
requirements.
(JRD) Actually I'd like to get published, but in a book. I'd
like to get a full length novel published.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) So are you using the internet to get practice?
(JRD) I'm using the internet to get my ideas out!
(Georgia) How big would your novel be?
(JRD) Not sure.
(Cindimarie) I have read books with just short stories from the same
author. I would buy a such a book from you, it would be nice.
(JRD) Thanks.
(Loki) So how would the lottery spoil you if you were to win it?
(JRD) I'd like to think it wouldn't spoil me. More likely it would
cause me to have to waste time with a lot of people who suddenly
decided I was their best friend or that I owed them something!
(Cindimarie) Do you have a web site?
(JRD) Not with my writing on it. At least not my TG stuff.
(Cindimarie) Thanks, this was my first time here on the "chat". I
really do enjoy your stories and talking here with you. I hope to talk to

(Loki) Which authors stories would you most like to be the main
character in and why?
(JRD) It may be hubris, but my own. Many of my stories are based on
my personal fantasies. I'd love to live at least part of them out.
(Loki) Where do you get your ideas?
(JRD) They just come to me. I might get one from an idea on TV, a
Newsgroup post or it might just spring to mind as I fall to sleep at
night.
(Loki) So have you ever had dreams similar to the stories that you
write?
(JRD) Not a dream, per se. I barely remember those.
(Mindy) We may have run out of them :) We have been at it for 2.5
hours, time flies when you are having fun :)
(Loki) A long time indeed. I wish I had arrived at the beginning so as
to have learned more.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) MOTHER! We are all grown up now, we can
stay up late!
(Mindy) Don't worry, it has been logged and will be up on the site
eventually, but there is nothing like being here and seeing it vs. reading
it.
(Moderator_Anne-Mal) That's right, when I edit the log, I'm in charge!

(Mindy) What I find interesting is how much many authors answer some
of the questions, like editing, the same. How their thoughts about their
stories are so different. There is a common ground and a diverse style
between those that have chatted so far.
