With 21 stories on Fictionmania! Do you have an opening statement?
(elrodw) I'm grateful to have the Fictionmania site so I can share my stories with
people with similar imaginations and interests. I'm not much on statements. Just
thanks for all the support and the challenges of trying to match some truly
outstanding authors. So, let's get to the questions!
(*Anne-Mal) So where *do* you get your crazy ideas from?
(elrodw) I've got a very unique imagination. most come from dreams, fantasies,
etc. There's always a little bit of me in every story, some more than others. For
example, I was in the Army. When I got out, I got some strange checks made
out to my Social Security Number, but to a different first name! I added a few
rather vivid dreams I had and a story was born!
(*Anne-Mal) "Flashbacks"?
(elrodw) That's the one! I don't know if anyone has ever had 'sensate' dreams,
but they were the basis for "Flashbacks". When they happen, oh-boy!
(Raven) Elrod, I put you in a small category of writers (like Ellie Dauber) who
seem to be able to write things down as if they just woke up from a vivid dream.
Can you tell us how to develop that ability?
(elrodw) I worked my imagination very hard starting early in life. I read a lot,
much more than the average person. I can digest a book in a night and I've
always challenged myself to mentally picture what's happening. Action/adventure
books cane give the imagination a good workout. From there, it's just a matter
of trying to get the words to match the mental imagery.
(Raven) Yes, but imagining and translating into the written word are two different
things. How does one flip that switch?
(elrodw) It's not easy. I've been doing creative writing for some time now. I find
that it's mostly practice and not being afraid to try and try again. It also helps to
be able to accept constructive criticism. I've known lots of people who take
constructive criticism personally, That kills creativity, in my mind.
(Raven) I get the impression that when you write you just may get up and act
things out before actually spitting out the words.
(elrodw) LOL. No, I just exercise my imagination a lot. I don't write until the
images are clear.
(Raven) Anyway, I'm a fan. I wanted to show my support by coming to tell you
so and wish you well.
(elrodw) Thanks. that means a lot coming from such an author as yourself!
(Bashful) Fred the Wizard had just offered to grant your fondest wish, but just
one, anything you want, what do you wish for?
(elrodw) I know what I'd like to wish for, but I'm also afraid of asking. I've
always wondered if the grass were greener but now, I've gotten to the point
where I've got too much to take a chance.
(Bashful) You are among friends, so be honest!
(elrodw) I'd really like to have the power to change my body in any way, twice a
day!
(Bashful) To female and back?
(elrodw) Have you read "Stripper's Image"? Of course! And I'd try out big
hooters! :)
(Bashful) LOL! At least once, right.
(Chrissy) What, if any published authors influence you?
(elrodw) Tom Clancy is a big influence. I also like the Clive Cussler stories,
"Dirk Pitt" and all, even though that's gotten old. Basically, some Mysteries and
any with good imagery.
There are lots of good SF in that category, Timothy Zahn's Star Wars books,
for example. And I can't forget Robert Heinlein!
(Chrissy) :)
(CarrieGore) Elrod, you know I'm a fan! :) Can you tell us how much time you
devote to your writing? 21 is a *lot* of stories!
(elrodw) It's tough! I'm doing a day job, trying to start a business and writing.
Not enough time!
I guess I do 10-12 hours a week, but it happens in bursts. Sometimes I go
weeks without writing, just because my imagination is stuck. The best part of
using imagination is that I can do it while I'm stuck in boring meetings. that helps
make my computer time much more productive!
(CarrieGore) *Hee* I can understand that! Thanks!
(lana) Do you plan on any further Pop Culture stories such as the Gilligan
Meteor story?
(elrodw) I have a story notebook with about 40 ideas, including a follow-up to
Gilligan, that was one of my favorite to write!
(lana) What other topics are included in your notebook?
(elrodw) A Bewitched story, but after the recent one, I've put that one down the
queue. I've got one about a wanna-be sketch artist who gets some help from the
SRU wizard.
Pop Culture is hard, it has to show up in a dream for me. The hard part is I don't
remember many dreams!

Does anyone want to ask about which are my least favorite stories I've written?
(*Anne-Mal) About you notebook, what exactly is in it? How do you put down
a story idea? Or answer your own question first!
(elrodw) The story idea file is a computer file. it lists the basic two-line idea for a
story. When I get ready to write, I expand it to a ten-twelve line outline, then see
if I'm ready to work on it or if it needs to cook some more. I'll come out of
meetings, open the file and add one or two sometimes. The ideas just pop into
my head.
Does anyone besides Anne want to hear about my 'stinkers'
(*Anne-Mal) You mean I don't count!
(elrodw) Well, as moderator, you have an advantage! (Of course, you count!)
(elrodw) My "X-Virus" was a quick hack job, it needs lots of work. I wanted
something short, but I picked the wrong topic. that one should have been almost
an anthology of 'diaries'.
The SRU story didn't start out that way and when I fumbled for something
magical to cause the transformation, I picked SRU, wrong choice, I should have
done a better tie-in!
(*Anne-Mal) So what exactly do you consider constrictive criticism?
(elrodw) Anything that doesn't start with "you stupid misbegotten oaf
masquerading as a hack writer..." Really, anything that I can think about and use
to improve a story as long as it doesn't get personal, I can usually avoid reacting
as if it were. If you've ever been in 'Toastmasters', you learn about how to give
and take, constructive criticism.
(*Anne-Mal) Have you actually gotten any?
(elrodw) Yes, but not as much as I'd like. The reviews I get on Fictionmania are
usually gushing praise. Not that I mind!!!!! My ego LOVES gushing praise!!!
(*Anne-Mal) Isn't that good?
(elrodw) I think that most people are shy about offering constructive criticism,
mostly from fear of it being taken personally.
(*Anne-Mal) Well, some have said that a more serious approach to reviews on
Fictionmania should appear? What do you think?
(elrodw) Personally, I'd like to see much more, but first-time authors can have a
real problem. It can turn off promising writers, so it's hard to say.
(CK1) Is there a story or topic that you've wanted to do for a long time, but
never had the proper inspiration to bring about?
(elrodw) I've got two techno-thriller novel ideas in my mind. I just can't seem to
get to the point of writing them, the imagery won't click. As far as TG stories,
inspiration has never been a problem! :)
(CK1) :)
(elrodw) The other thing is a slight fear of actually trying to publish a story. that's
why I love Fictionmania, it takes off the pressure.
(*Anne-Mal) Should an author at least try to write as many different types of TG
fiction as possible or just stay with the ones that they enjoy?
(elrodw) My opinion, for what it's worth, is that you should write what you
enjoy. For example, I'll never write a bondage and humiliation story, because I
don't enjoy them. Note that "Innocent Affair" really pushed my self-imposed
rule, the hero was thoroughly humiliated in that one. but he won in the end.
(*Anne-Mal) But isn't it a challenge to write something different?
(elrodw) It sure is! :) But then, you can always find enough plot twists, unique
characters and such and still stay in a theme you're comfortable in. I think writing
something different is mostly a matter of not being afraid to try something
different. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Any other questions? Or shall I just rant on endlessly, extolling the virtues of my
favorite stories!
(*Anne-Mal) Well let's open it up for a free-for-all! And let the questions fly at

(Bashful) What other TG authors do you admire?
(elrodw) Bill Hart, the SRU universe is wonderful and the "Strangeness" was a
wonderful start.
I've read some of the Professor's stuff, Ovid is another magnificent creation, but
it's just not quite erotic enough for me!
(BillHart) Can I blush now or should I wait?
(elrodw) Go ahead, you earned it!
(*Anne-Mal) You should have put your make-up on before the chat Bill!
(elrodw) I loved "Wiz TV". Eddie Glover is great at crafting the written word.
(And he seems to love big hooters!) :)
(Bashful) Don't we all, except apparently for Anne!
(elrodw) There are really too many to name individually. Bash has some good
stuff. Morpheus. Raven.
(Bashful) I mean you can get them if you want them now!
(elrodw) I actually got a comment on my first Fantasy Island story complaining
that the hero was turned into a big-busted woman. I guess if I got Fred the
wizard's wish, I'd find out if they're all they're cracked up to be! :)
(*Anne-Mal) Does there need to be a master reviewer here on Fictionmania?
(elrodw) No! That might discourage first-time authors from writing, besides, we
all have our own tastes in stories.
(Bashful) The first review of my first story told me how badly I had formatted the
story. If I had not gotten that review, I would have either written a couple of
stories and left because I wasn't getting read.
(*Anne-Mal) So you feel that every story should be posted, no matter what?
(elrodw) Well, that's not quite an answer either. You have to get reviews, but
you also have to be able to take it as constructive. I hate having a story where
the counter gets stuck.
(Bashful) I took it as helpful criticism, it was written that way.
(elrodw) It's discouraging, but lots of reviews can make up for a low counter.
(Bashful) I prefer to count reviews, especially meaningful ones!
(*Anne-Mal) But reviews aren't criticism!
(elrodw) If you're serious, you start looking for serious reviews. Otherwise, you
hack a story or two and quit!
(Bashful) They can be Anne, Eric writes reviews that tell me more than all the
"great story" ones I will ever get!
(Raven) Anne, I am resisting the obvious attack on Eric
(elrodw) I got one very touching review on my least-read story, "To Choose a
Life". It wasn't a posted review, it was an e-mail about how the story touched
the sender's life, that means a lot to an author! I get a few like that. They bring a
tear to MY eye when I reread them! (Or maybe I need some Visine!)
(Raven) It's the smog!
(Bashful) elrod, I know you're stories are a little off the beaten path, but I have
enjoyed everyone that I read!
(*Anne-Mal) But who is qualified to make constructive criticism?
(elrodw) That's the toughest part of Toastmasters, it's a learned skill. It's not
easy to be constructive. Some people think it's harder to be constructive than to
write. (Except for critics, of course!) :)
(Bashful) It depends on what you are trying to educate someone about, if the
formatting is off and the paragraphs are three pages long, I'll say something.
(elrodw) So why is it that my erotic stories, like "Stripper's Image" and
"Neighbor's Amulet" get read so much, while the less erotic, more personal ones
aren't read as much?
(*Anne-Mal) No keyword for personal stories!
(Bashful) I think the erotic stories are what most people are looking for!
(elrodw) They can be fun to write, too! It took a few cold showers to finish
"Stripper's Image"!
(Bashful) And fun to read! Why would you write a story where you have to take
a cold shower? Fess up!
(elrodw) Bash, when you have 2 little kids in the house, well, cold showers are
sometimes a necessity! Sometimes I reread them after the kids are in bed! :)
(Bashful) My highest count are for stories that are rated X, but the ones I like
best don't get hits.
(elrodw) Same thing I've seen, Bash.
(*Anne-Mal) Do you ever reread your stories?
(elrodw) All the time, Anne!
(Debi) Elrod, where do you receive the inspiration for your writing?
(elrodw) Lots of dreams, Debi. And some very personal fantasies.
(Debi) I was told once, by another author, that my writing isn't valid, because I
haven't experienced TG issues in real life!
(elrodw) Debi, I haven't either. That didn't stop me!
(Debi) I'm a genetic girl. Does an author have to be TG to write realistic
material?
(*Anne-Mal) No one has the right to say someone's writing isn't valid!
(Bashful) I agree! I have people who like my stories, that's all the validation that
I need, now I want to write better stories.
(Debi) Anne, this person's logic is that I can't possibly relate to what a TG
person should feel or act like because I haven't lived the experiences.
(elrodw) Debi, I'm a middle-aged, professional non-TG man. So what? I just
use my imagination. anyone who tells you that is full of it!
(Debi) Elrod, that's good to know. I won't monopolize your time. I'm happy to
listen for a bit :o)
(cNf) Debi, everyone's experience will be different and equally valid!
(*Anne-Mal) Depends on how you define TG!
(Jerri) if you like to read this stuff, then you are! On the other hand Debi, I am
definitely TG, I life as a woman with my boyfriend, but I ain't no writer! :)
(Bashful) Debi I got a e-mail from someone who jumped on me for the way I
chose to end a story, because I had an epilogue that didn't talk about what she
wanted me to talk about!
(elrodw) Debi, does this person have brown eyes? Because they are full of it up
to their eyebrows!
(Debi) I agree. But I wanted another author's opinion.
(elrodw) Did you ever wonder? Then you've had a TG experience or fantasy!
So write!
(Bashful) I would agree that I would not be able to write a convincing CD/TV
story because I don't dress, but I do fantasize, therefore I can write!
(Debi) I've written two for this site. "Surgeon General's Warning" and "Second
Hand Smoke" that uses cigarettes as the catalyst for the TG change.
(*Anne-Mal) So what do you consider TG?
(elrodw) I think TG is anything that involves mental or physical changes. I've had
lots of fantasies and dreams, so I think that's TG.
(Jerri) *Clap* *Clap* :)
(*Anne-Mal) What about CD?
(elrodw) I've got to take a couple of minutes to tuck my son in, be back in a bit!
Meanwhile, you can all nit-pick my stories! ;)
(Bashful) I think CD/TV is TG, definitely! It takes more courage to go outside
dressed then sit in a motel room, as I am doing now, and write strange stories!
(Jerri) How about my boyfriend? Is he TG? :)
(Bashful) That's for him to decide, we shouldn't label others!

characters come from?
(Jerri) Where do your characters come from elrodw? :)
(cNf) Elrod, no one thought of asking yet! :)
(BillHart) I just thought they all came from Cleveland!
(elrodw) No, some of the weirder ones come from Wyoming! I LIVED in
Wyoming once. Long, long ago, when I was just a wee lad.
I don't know how other authors do it, but most of my characters, the male ones at least,
have parts of me in them.
(BillHart) Isn't that painful?
(elrodw) Nah! I've got plenty of quirks and foibles inside me, so I don't miss
them! :)
(BillHart) I can understand that.
(cNf) Elrod, how much has your childhood experience influenced your writing
style?
(elrodw) Lots, in one story, the second Fantasy Island story I believe, the main
character was unhappy because he'd been told his parents wanted a girl. That
really happened to me, a painful experience.
(Jerri) Wow!
(elrodw) Add to that having an older brother and one younger sister, it was
tough. The funny part of it is that it helps me relate to my characters, to their
motivations and desires.
(Bashful) Don't pay the ransom, I escaped!
(elrodw) We wondered where you'd gone!
Is anyone curious about which of my stories I like the most? Because I'm going
to tell you!!!
(Bashful) Yes please do!
(Jerri) You ask yourself good questions! :)
(elrodw) "Flashbacks" is my favorite, by a long ways. It's got mystery, changes
and buried secrets.
I really like my second Fantasy Island story, about the anniversary gift.
As far as my erotic ones, "Strippers Image". Changes, big hooters and unique
changes.
Of my 'comedy' stories, I used to like Gilligan best, now I'm not sure.

(elrodw) I wrote lots of story ideas and clips. After I found Fictionmania, I
watched and waited and eventually got up the nerve to post.
(Jerri) You have lots of different kinds of stories, is that on purpose?
(elrodw) My imagination goes all over the place, I just follow it.
(Jerri) Do you plan a story or do they just happen?
(elrodw) Jerri, I start with a basic one or two line idea, then I try to make it into
a short (10-12 lines) outline. If the ideas don't survive that, then I drop it and try
again later.
(Jerri) I gotta go too, my keeper is pulling my chain! :)

I'm trying to finish a story that's been brewing for many months now. Lots of
short stories are happening in between, though...
(BillHart) I must have a half dozen stories waiting for something to click in my
mind.
(elrodw) I've got five in works, with words actually written.
(*Anne-Mal) How often do you add ideas to your notebook?
(elrodw) Anne, I get two or three ideas a month. Sometimes more, sometimes
less. The one I'm working most on is a rather long story about a couple who
want children, but due to her genetic damage, the only way is for him to have
genetically engineered cloned organs and be the mother.
(BillHart) Interesting idea!
(elrodw) Of course, a vengeful ex-girlfriend is there for some mystery! As I said,
I love mystery!
(BillHart) You can't leave out those old vengeful girlfriends!
(elrodw) Especially when she 'programs' the guy into very high sex drive!
(BillHart) I know the type!
(elrodw) The wife gets the cloned male organ so they can have natural sex! Of
course, the ex-girlfriend wants to frame the changed guy and hurt him. You can
guess where this one is going!
(elrodw) Can I ask which story is the favorite of everyone still here?
(*Anne-Mal) I liked "Flashbacks".
(BillHart) So did I.
(*Anne-Mal) What do you dislike most about Fictionmania?
(elrodw) I honestly can't think of anything. Now, one from me?
(*Anne-Mal) It's your dime!
(elrodw) Do you think the "Flashbacks" universe can exist as a stand-alone
universe or did the one story take the surprise and mystery? I did leave a large
number of unaccounted for subjects and the alien contraption is still there, but
I'm afraid that anything else will be an also-ran.
(BillHart) Perhaps, but story universes require people writing in them besides the
creator.
(*Anne-Mal) I think the problem with your universe is that your process has no
name.
(elrodw) A long time ago, I thought that Fantasy Island might be a good
universe, but no one else seemed to think so.
(BillHart) Fantasy Island might actually make a good universe, but again, people
have to want to write there.
(elrodw) I guess I can take my 'universes' and write up rules and post them and
see if anyone else writes. I've got about 4 main recurring themes, but I'm kind of
afraid to let them go. Is that how you did it, Bill? SRU is probably THE most
recognized and loved universe we have!
(BillHart) SRU just sort of evolved.
(elrodw) And very nicely, I must say!
(BillHart) I was three chapters into "Strangeness at the Frat House" and got
stuck. I wrote a related story and told everyone they could write in it if they
wanted.
(*Anne-Mal) Actually, now that the government has the process from
"Flashbacks", what are they going to do with it?
(elrodw) I did leave a couple of hints how the government was using it, but it's
pretty wide open.
(*Anne-Mal) Well you said what the government said they were using it for, not
what they were really using it for!
(elrodw) True, Anne! Too true!
(*Anne-Mal) Like say a president wants to remain in power, so he looks like his
successor!

wants more variety, they have a fight and he goes to a strip club. He gets some
special attention and ends up looking like Traci Topps, with a unique twist!

(elrodw) I appreciate the feedback I've gotten from people. It really helps me
stay motivated, especially when I get stuck. And I appreciate having a forum
where I can put my strangest thoughts, dreams and fantasies to pen and share
them with like-minded people.
