(Mindy) Yes the connection blew up at the Telco communications office about
8:30 last night. It did not come back up until 10:30 this morning after they
flew parts in from California.

(Mindy) Let me think, I think Wendy claimed she was preo about 60 days ago.
(*Wendy-J) OK! Here we go. Tonight's Guest is Darkside!
DS, do you have an opening statement?
(Darkside) *Darkside walks up to a plinth and speaks into the plethora of
microphones mounted on it*
"Ladies and gentlemen? I would like to thank you for coming, and in the course
of this briefing I will endeavor to answer all of your questions as best I
can. I now hand you over to my chief political advisor, Wendy-J who will field
all of your questions."
(Paul1954) Darkside, you write in a pretty 'dark' style, although you've done
a SRU that was a bit lighter. Do you ever feel like doing more of these
brighter stories?
(Darkside) Sometimes, I do. But to be honest I like dark stories. The SRU
story was a lot of fun, but I had to try hard not kill people off in it.
(Paul1954) I prefer you're darker ones, they're spooky!
(Darkside) Thanks Paul! Yeah, I like to think I write serious stories that
make you think and consider yourself.
(SteveZ) DS, how do you manage to write such lengthy stories and keep
everything in order with plot and characters? I like the dark stories, also.
(Darkside) Thanks Steve! Basically I map everything out in my head. I then jot
down key plot points in the document. [Such as Matthew takes another pill.]
That's enough to jog my memory.
(Mindy) Let's stay with the long stories "Fury" 1 and 2. They could have
easily been 6 or 8 stories, any reason you decided to write so long in one
sitting and do you think it hurts the amount of reads it gets, meaning might
readers park it because of the size?
(Darkside) My SRU story has 4 times of reads as "Fury" does, but I rate "Fury"
higher.
(Nostrumo) Well, it was stated you wrote dark stories, but do you really
consider them dark? Or in other words where for you gray starts and for others
black begins?
(Darkside) I don't consider them that dark, "Incubus" the story about a serial
killer, is in fact a love story. "Fury" is a love story.
(Paul1954) Do you find much time to read other work when you're writing, it is
becoming a real problem for me?
(Darkside) Tell me about it. I feel guilty about not telling authors how great
their stuff is. I did that for 5 years until I couldn't get the time.
(*Wendy-J) DS, I have been posting each chapter of my "Midnight Downloads" as
I finish. Do you like sending out a story in one piece or do you use feedback
to help you as go?
(Darkside) I use Vickie Tern as a sounding board, I send her the first drafts,
nearly drove her potty with my last "Fury" story. I only send completed
stories.
(sue) You have been writing TG for a while now, do you think that the
direction and writing style of TG is changing as newer authors come into the
genre?
(Darkside) I think so. I think it's moving away from out and out erotica and
moving into discussing on what it means to be female. I like thought provoking
stuff, but fun stuff appeals too.
(Paul1954) Do you think the standard of TG writing has improved with the
availability of great sites like this and Nifty? The quantity, certainly, has
gone up!
(Darkside) It's hard to say. I would have to say the quality has vastly
improved from the early stuff. I've got most of the early TG stories, shame
the authors can't be traced otherwise I'd send em in!
(Rebel) Your stories tend to be long and complicated, do you have any shorter
crowd pleasures waiting in the wings?
(Darkside) Maybe, if you can call 75K short. A story called "Wouldn't It Be
Good". You are given a choice between living your life as a depressive gender
dysphasia sufferer or living just one day as the girl of your dreams and then
dying. Would you do it?
(Vickie) You're rarely down and dirty sexually. What interests you more in the
TG experience?
(Darkside) I think it's the idea of being something or someone different. To
explore and express a side of you that you may not even know is there.
(Paul1954) I'm still wading through "Fury" myself. I've noticed you haven't
had a lot of feedback yet, probably due to it's size. Has this affected, or
depressed you at all?
(Darkside) When it first came out (on Usenet), it did and still does. I felt I
spent 5 years writing this and people can't even be bothered to say if they
liked it or not. A friend gave me some good advice and I calmed down and saw
it more circumspectly.
(Vickie) "Fury" began with many different tale-tellers. It ended with one
authorial tale teller. How come?
(Darkside) I wanted to explore different writing styles.
(*Wendy-J) You have a talent for writing that I have not seen before, it
borders on the dark like Stephen King yet it is romantic where do you get
you're impetus?
(Darkside) Thanks Wendy! *Blush* It comes from the heart. I'm an incurable
romantic at heart, but cynical enough to realise that people can do bad things
and that goodies may not always be the goodies they first seem.
(Paul1954) "Incubus" was a favourite of mine, almost "X-files" in it's
overtones. The amount of detail in it was impressive. Do you do research for
your work, if so how much and do you find it a chore?
(Darkside) Yeah, I did loads of research for "Incubus". Had a few chats with a
coroner about effects of axe wounds and bleeding. Good job they knew me,
otherwise they'd have got worried!
Much of "Fury" was research. A good way to expand the mind.
(Paul1954) It shows!
(Darkside) Thanks!
(*Wendy-J) I'd like to believe "Fury" was a long time in the writing and that
you struggled with it, but is flows magnificently! How did you accomplish
that?
(Darkside) A lot of hard planning. I had it all worked out in advance, so it
was like painting by numbers. It sounds easy but it was VERY hard.
(*Wendy-J) I knew I was doing something wrong!
(Darkside) I could never have managed it, making it up as I went along. I
think "Fury" as a whole has about 50 plots threads.
(*Wendy-J) Gah!
(Vickie) Not knowing what was REALLY happening in your plots, as the good guys
turn out to be bad (or someone else) is what drove me bonkers. Like a
kaleidoscopic world or maybe like a Rubik's Cube to be solved. Eventually all
does come clear, and the reasons for the deceptions. That's what I like most
in your work.
(Darkside) Thanks. I do try and be a little devious. After All you've a
reputation for being tricky yourself!
(*Wendy-J) How did you get started writing DS?
(Darkside) I got started in 1994 and read such stories as "DNA", "Joe Bates"
(Who hasn't!) and lapped up everything posted by a guy called the Archivist.
Then I discovered Nifty (Thanks Nostrumo!) and whole new world opened up.
As I read stories I thought 'I can do this' and gave it a go. "Fury" Book 1
was my first ever. I posted it to Nostrumo, who then posted it to his mailing
list.
Vickie Tern then tidied it up for me, posted it to Usenet and much to my
surprise it got perfect 10's and a place in Celeste's top 30 stories of 1997!
(Nostrumo) *Blush*
(Vickie) Some syntax and formatting only. The plots are yours. My devious mind
is tasked by yours! Where did your main idea for "Fury" originate?
(Darkside) I got the idea for "Fury" when sitting on a mountainside in
England. I thought to myself, 'What's the nastiest thing to do to someone to
break up a marriage'. "Fury" was based on that premise.
(*Wendy-J) I have to ask this, why would you want to break up a marriage?
(Darkside) Wendy, I wouldn't, but It was an idea that popped into my head at
the time.
(Paul1954) Some has to ask this, if you could become a character in one of
your own stories who would it be?
(Darkside) Now that's a tricky one. Can I ask you the same thing while I think
about it?
(Paul1954) Oh bum, now I've gotta think!!
(Darkside) Ok, I think I'd have to be Kat. After all she is based on my wife,
you know Kat you know her.
(Paul1954) I expected as much about Kat.
(Darkside) I'm still waiting Paul! :)
(Paul1954) The original Tom in "Sultan's Choice".
(Darkside) Paul, I'd go along with that one.
(Vickie) And Dr. B, the feminist fatale of them all? *Grin* Also your wife?

(Darkside) I'm open to ideas as to where Dr. Bexley's character comes from.
(There are elements of my wife in her too, but only the cute ones!)
(Nostrumo) DS, you said "Fury" was your first and longest work. Do you think
you would do it again and would you like to invest so much time again for a
story?
(Darkside) I don't think so, although I am writing a non TG novel which will
be the same length or more as "Fury". "Fury" took so much of my time (I reckon
about 2000-3000 hours!), that's a BIG commitment!
(Nostrumo) This may be a reason to write stories with smaller commitment?
(Darkside) Nostrumo, very true. I plan a story first and as long as the story
is told, the length doesn't matter!

(Vickie) Is there any spill over between your day-to-day work and your
writing?
(Darkside) Vickie, apart from a few technology bits, not really. My method of
planning things out in advance and doing this in methodical way is certainly a
carry over.
(*Wendy-J) This is so hard with the lag that some of you are experiencing. We
need to do something, so I think it best if we opened up the floor to
questions. Remember this is DS' night, the spotlight is on him!
(Darkside) Ok, open em up!
(Anne) Why did you pick the name Darkside?
(Darkside) The stories I've written I consider to be in that first category. I
was once told, that if you want to learn to write, then first write stories
that are the opposite to the stories you want to write. Once you can do that
well, the stories that *are* like you want will be much better. Hence the name
Darkside. My stories represent the darker side of my personality.
(Nostrumo) Hmm, DS then you must be a very bright and shiny persona, because I
think you are not as dark as you think. This is a compliment!
(Darkside) I did an IQ test a while back and scored well over 140 and have a
degree, so I guess I'm fairly smart
(Vickie) Regarding your IQ, did you once try to write dumb stories and fail at
it, by this principle of opposites?
(Darkside) Vickie, yes that dumb story you made me write because I lost a bet
with you.
(Nostrumo) Err, what bet what dumb story? We are now very nosy and curious! :)
(Darkside) "Letters", it was supposed to be a take on all those old Marvel
comics where a superhero is created by gamma rays and sunspots. Don't think it
quite came out right.
(Nostrumo) Any other story genres in TG would you like to write in or not?
(Darkside) I think TV stories would be hard for me to write.
Nost, I like the freedom to choose what I write. I had an idea for a SRU story
so I wrote it even though it was only 22K. My intro.'s are usually longer than
that!
(Anne) Does that mean you write under a different name other stories that are
from the lighter side?
(*Wendy-J) Valid question!
(Darkside) Anne, I only use Darkside at the moment. I would consider using
another pseudonym if it suited but I would keep the two separate.
(Anne) So you have a lot more *darkness* to get out?
(Darkside) Anne, Yes I would say so. BTW, I have one more "Fury" story
planned. It won't effect the ending, but it will flesh out the last chapter.
As yet I'm undecided if to write it or not, I can be persuaded though..
(*Wendy-J) WRITE!

(sue) What type of TG story would you like to write next, DS?
(Darkside) Sue, something a little more close to home for many of the TS
community.
(sue) I think that would be most appreciated, DS.
(Anne) Is feedback more important from fellow authors or just plain readers?
(Darkside) Anne, any feedback. I write for feedback as most people here do.
(Anne) May I ask why?
(Darkside) Anne, because it's the only way I know if what I write is really
any good or not. I may think it's the best ever, but if it sucks then I need
to know so I can get better.
(sue) That is an interesting comment to hear, DS. Often, here at Fictionmania,
when one comments on a story, the commentator may wonder if the comments will
be useful to the author. Thanks for the feedback.
(*Wendy-J) Sue they are always wanted appreciated and needed!
(Darkside) sue, any comments are useful. I'm very bad at giving them myself,
but I do try.
(Anne) I disagree about the feedback, it is so sparse that any comment is
magnified out of proportion! Pro and specially con.
(*Wendy-J) You may be right there Anne.
(Darkside) Anne, that's a valid point.
(sue) Well, let's hear about that from an author. DS, any comments on what
Anne said?
(Darkside) Anne has a valid point, but I'd rather have the choice though. I
keep every comment I get and if I'm feeling a little stuck or fed up writing I
read a few and it helps me see that it's worth it.
(*Wendy-J) I do the same. Keeps me out of the dumps.
(Darkside) The "Fury Directive" review from Allison W. gave me an ever bigger
head than I normally have for ages.
(*Wendy-J) What advice would you give an aspiring author?
(Darkside) I know others do it differently, but I need to plan things first.
1) Get your idea.
2) Get to know your characters.
3) Make sure you know what you're going to do in the story.
And follow my 3 three point plot rules! Choices, Actions and Consequences.
(Nostrumo) How do you get your ideas into a straight line? I know I have an
idea, but then realize that it is only a picture or graphic scene which I
could not describe.
(Darkside) Every character has choices to make, describe them, then describe
their actions and then work out the consequences of them on all the others in
the story.
(Nostrumo) Hm, that sounds like a approach from Pascal or was it Laplace with
the ever knowing demon.
(Darkside) Nost, It's hard. Difficult to explain, but I hope the above helps.
I dunno where it came from. Vickie says, "Oh! That's like so and so's style
back in 1300." and I have no idea what she's on about. I just say it seems
like the right thing to do.

(Bashful) Do your characters ever take the story in a different direction than
you planned?
(Darkside) Bashful, sometimes. The original ending to "Fury" had Matthew
jumping off a building, unable to cope with what Liz had done to him, but then
there were loose ends to tie up.
(Bashful) I had a character choose to remain a woman when I intended to change
him back, but the scene worked better that way. I still don't know where it
came from!
(Darkside) It's usually the other way around for me. I have to veto what my
more vicious side says to me!
(Bashful) In my story, I had a plan for the end, but the new ending worked
better I think.
(*Wendy-J) Doesn't that cause problemss in the story later?
(Darkside) Not really, because once it's planned I can't change it that much.
It'd be like pulling on a thread and unraveling the entire jersey. It *is*
restrictive and no doubt I do it other ways if it suits, but it really was the
only way to keep 50 separate story threads going.
(*Wendy-J) Oh I see.
(Nostrumo) Hm, then you might have to try a better weave pattern.
(Darkside) Nost, I'll give it a go cheers! Y
(Vickie) Sometimes your plots seem to me like intricate computer programs.
(Not that I get past the duh stage myself reading programs.)
(Darkside) They are intricate computer programs. I have a program that churns
them out for me! :)
(Vickie) And keep 50 threads woven together into a single whole cloth!
(Nostrumo) Hm, a single cloth could be done out of several smaller cloths.
(*Wendy-J) What and make a patchwork quilt!
(Darkside) Nost, true. If you look at the structure of "Kat O Nine Tales"
you'll see it's almost fractal in nature. Chaos theory in a TG story.
Many smaller events effecting larger ones. The parallels between the
characters. Liz, Kat the 'Anti-Liz' and Cathline the 'Nearly Liz'.
(Nostrumo) Fractal? What it's dimension and after which Norm?

(Vickie) I like conceiving a character much less morally inhibited than me and
then plotting that character's greater freedom of action. It's exhilarating.
If Kat's like your wife, who in "Fury" is like you?
(Darkside) Matthew's most like me, I guess.
(Vickie) Matthew's you as victim then. But you're the hero and arch
manipulator too? A Dr. Bexley now and then?
(Darkside) As I said I've no idea where she came from, Matthew's simple,
honest and open.
